Vermont African American Heritage Trail The Vermont African American Heritage Trail Initiative promotes the exploration of black history in Vermont through cultural tourism.

On January 15th 2013, Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, Vermont Partnership for Fairness & Diversity (www.vermontpartnership.org) and the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing launched the Vermont African American Heritage Trail. This public-private sector collaboration serves to increase Vermont’s visibility in the growing marketplace for cultural tourism among African Americans and to shape a positive narrative regarding people of color in Vermont against the backdrop of a national narrative of negative stereotypes. During Phase One (2008 – 2013) Vermont Partnership researched 90+ potential historic sites and successfully pitched the idea of the Vermont African American Heritage Trail to the Vermont Department of Tourism & Marketing. The trail launched in 2013 with 19 sites including twelve museums and historical societies and seven State Historic Markers. The twentieth site, the Andrew Harris State Historic Marker, was established in early 2016. We anticipate the state will approve a historic marker dedicated to the Buffalo Soldiers by the end of 2016. Phase Two began in 2015 and focuses on making the trail accessible to Vermont educators, school children, and families through the creation of an online portal for educators and geo-caching. And to that end Vermont Partnership launched www.vtafricanamericanheritage.net and created the Facebook.com page. Vermont Partnership seeks funds to a) build out more content on the educator’s website, b) create a downloadable, location-based mobile application, and c) to create a smart and creative social media plan. These three elements are aimed to attract tourists to the trail locations, educate children and adults, and enhance the image of Vermont as inclusive and welcoming.

We are working with Crime Research Group (CRG) on a study funded by the National Institute of Justice to help find people willing to talk about their experience as a defendant of color in Southern Vermont criminal courts. Researchers are looking to speak with people over the age of 18 who have at least one closed criminal case since 2019 that was handled in Bennington, Rutland, Windham, and/or Windsor County.
