Congratulations to The Whiteclay Makerspace on being awarded a $50,000 grant from Walking Together. The Walking Together support allows the The Whiteclay Makerspace to sustain and expand programs, resources, and opportunities for the Lakota community. This support directly enables the Makerspace to purchase materials and supplies for art training and instructional classes and workshops, provide honoraria for instructors, furnish and equip two classrooms, and offer financial assistance to participants who might otherwise be unable to attend.

Native American activist Leonard Peltier released from prison after nearly 50 years — Reuters Native American activist Leonard Peltier, convicted of killing two FBI agents and incarcerated for nearly five decades while maintaining his innocence, was released from a Florida prison on Tuesday after former President Joe Biden commuted his sentence.

On this day in 1887, the Dawes Severalty Act (also known as the General Allotment Act) was signed into law by President Grover Cleveland. Under this act, Native American tribes' jointly held reservations were divided up into smaller units, which were then distributed to individual tribe members. The legislation, however, had a significant impact on tribal sovereignty, as it changed the legal status of Native Americans from tribal members to individuals who were subject to federal laws.

The Dawes Severalty Act aimed to assimilate American Indians into the country's agrarian culture. After a statutory period of 25 years, allotments could be sold, and any unallocated "surplus" land was made available to settlers. Within decades of the act's passage, the vast majority of tribal land in the West was in the hands of white settlers.
