WHO PAID THE BILL?
The restaurant was pleasant to the eyes, the colorful menu had all options. From the starter to the main course to the dessert, everything looked good and desirable to make one indulge. We thought we were wise. But a close look at the cost section, there was nothing. The price of everything on the menu was hidden.
This was deliberate. But who did it?
We ate, became full and burped and belched and got drunk with living the life, we danced through the days and nights, we yielded to everything and anything, oblivious of who was going to pay the bill.
We asked for more and more was brought to us. The appetite only grew stronger. The belly called 'self' grew larger and larger.
The restaurant was full but there was space for more. It never gets full. The feeding frenzy was on a high.
Finally, the bill was passed to us. No one wanted to touch it because no amount of money in any currency could clear the bill.
No barter trade, no phone call, no text message, no Mpesa, no credit card, no soft loan could save us in paying the bill.
The only option was to pay up by going to the "hot kitchen" and face the punishment. The problem is, this was not an ordinary kitchen. You won’t peel potatoes; you get peeled.
No living person could do this and no one could afford it. Not even the world’s wealthiest combined could pay the bill. This was too expensive. No name was found; no SOS contact could be reached.
It was a hopeless situation in a hopeless place.
But, someone came through in the nick of time. Finally, hope arrived, love arrived, peace arrived, mercy arrived, grace arrived. He was not on the guest list, He was not invited, He was not involved, He didn’t eat with us, but He came to pay the bill. Your bill, my bill, our bill.
A gruesome death through a method called crucifixion was the only currency that could clear this bill.
Sandwiched between two thieves, suspended between heaven and earth. He only came to pay the bill but we rejected His payment. We attempted to stone Him, spat on Him, called Him names, slapped Him, punched Him until His face got disfigured, squeezed a crown of thorns on His bloody head, denied Him water to quench His thirst, walked away and denied knowing Him, stripped Him naked and prepared Him for ex*****on. Reason for this punishment? He was only coming to pay the bill.
His name is Jesus Christ.
Today, will you accept the price He paid or will you reject it?
The Bill has been paid. Jesus paid the price with His own life.
