🎊 Congratulations to our newest Alice Rowan Swanson Fellow, Haimanot Assefa!

For her fellowship, Haimanot will implement Healing in Dignity: A Rural Women's Endometriosis & Peace Campaign in Kisumu County, Kenya—a grassroots initiative designed to raise awareness of endometriosis and strengthen healthcare access for rural women and girls.

The project builds on research Haimanot conducted during her Independent Study Project (ISP) on our Kenya program, Global Health and Human Rights. Through interviews with rural women experiencing endometriosis symptoms, she examined the condition’s impact on quality of life and found that many women were unaware that severe menstrual pain is abnormal and treatable.

Now, through the Alice Rowan Swanson Fellowship, Haimanot will turn those research findings into action.

A 2025 alumna of SIT’s Kenya program and recent Denison University graduate with a degree in Global Health, Haimanot exemplifies how study abroad can inspire meaningful, community-centered change.

🇳🇱 "My semester with SIT Netherlands was one of the best of my life. My class on q***r and feminist theory grew my comfort and knowledge within the subject, both academically and practically. The hands-on experiential learning component is central to the SIT curriculum and allowed us to continuously apply what we learned in the classroom to the real world. I've learned so much about the Netherlands and its history, peoples, and politics. From classes to my homestay to the people I met when I explored the city, I have grown significantly in my understanding of myself, the Netherlands, and the world at large. The homestay was absolutely a highlight of my time with SIT. I felt loved, cared for, and greatly supported. I was able to continuously work on my Dutch language skills with my homestay, too. Overall, I could not recommend this program enough." -Anna Weiss, International Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender alum, Fall '25

🎉 🇲🇬 Our students have spoken! We're thrilled to share that our Madagascar program, Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management, has been recognized as a top-rated study abroad program based on student reviews! 🌍️

Here's what our students are saying:

"This was absolutely the most incredible experience I’ve had. I feel so grateful to have been able to witness the diversity and beauty of the wildlife and plants - it's magic you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Every day we spend in the forest was easily one of the best days of my life." - Ulla Kymlander

"I discovered three new species of frogs in the coastal rainforest. I am now a published scientist and have fielded interviews with NPR, BBC, and others. That life-changing experience could not have happened without the mentorship of [the program director] and the deep immersion in Malagasy culture and ecosystems that this program offers." - Hugh Gabriel

"If you are thinking about enrolling- DO IT! The hands on experience with Madagascar's rich biodiversity gave meaning to my biology degree. I now have expertise in field sampling methods, which has opened doors to new opportunities for me." Ryan Thompson

"I learned so much inside and outside the classroom. The cultural immersion is unlike any experience I have ever had and probably will ever have. From this program I developed an interest in the field I now have a career in, and I am so thankful." - Josh Coster
