: Your time abroad was just the beginning. How will you put your experience into action?

For Haimanot Assefa ’25, her SIT Study Abroad experience in Kenya inspired her to pursue a project to advance women’s health and human rights in rural communities. Through the Alice Rowan Swanson Fellowship, she will return to Kenya to turn that inspiration into action.

The Alice Rowan Swanson Fellowship provides $5,000 to help SIT Study Abroad and International Honors Program alumni return to their program country and implement a project to advance human rights in the region.

Some moments in study abroad simply can’t be replicated in a classroom. 🇮🇳

During a recent excursion to McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh, students in SIT’s India: Public Health, Gender, and Sexuality program had the extraordinary opportunity to receive a blessing from His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Their time in McLeod Ganj is part of a broader exploration of health and well-being within the region’s Tibetan community. Students learn through firsthand experiences as they examine how public health, gender, sexuality, and community intersect across diverse contexts in India.

The pass gives students access to Switzerland’s extensive public transportation network, making it easy to explore new cities and destinations during free weekends. Valued at approximately $1,000, it offers significant savings on transportation by train, bus, and boat—so students can spend more time exploring and less time worrying about getting around.

SIT alum TJ Broyles from Loyola Marymount University studied on our International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy program and called the Swiss Travel Pass one of the best parts of his experience. "Just lyin’ around.⁠
This was the first lion I saw in Tanzania, and it was an unbelievable preliminary sighting. He was not easy to spot, but finding him immediately taught me that if I kept an open eye I could find amazing things in Tanzania. This lesson was true, as I saw seemingly boundless wildlife including dozens of lions throughout the semester. It all started with this lion, who was resting after a big meal. ⁠
I call him Garfield."⁠

🎉 🥇 Congratulations to our SIT Photo Contest first place winner, Rhett Krovitz from University of Virginia! Rhett participated in our Spring 2026 Iceland: Climate Change and the Arctic program and shared the following caption:

“A student enjoys the beautiful glacier caves out southern Iceland. Blue hues of all shades and depths. A stunning scenery while learning about the history of glacial formation and transition.”

Rhett’s first place photo captures both the striking beauty of Iceland’s glacier caves and the field-based learning at the heart of the SIT experience—studying climate change and glacial processes within the landscapes where they are unfolding.
