During , we recognize Anna Hunt Marsh (c. 1769 – 1834), the first woman to establish a mental health hospital.
The Brattleboro Retreat was founded in 1834 through a $10,000 bequest, as attested in her will, for the humane treatment of people with challenges.
Despite the prevailing attitudes of the time, which often dismissed mental illness as untreatable, Anna remained steadfast in her belief in compassionate care, a legacy that continues today.
