One weekend, two Appalachian festivals 🎶

What do the John C. Campbell Folk School and Foxfire have in common? A shared commitment to the stories, music and craft traditions of Appalachia.

This fall, consider supporting both organizations for two events happening the first weekend in October. Foxfire hosts its annual Mountaineer Festival on Oct. 3, and the Folk School hosts its 50th Annual Fall Festival Oct. 3 and 4.

About Capt'n Gene & Ken Conner
Gene Johnson I was born Juneau, Alaska 1941, raised on a cotton farm in Mississippi, 1943 to 1960. He completed High School and joined United States Navy serving 42 years aboard 22 ships. Gene retired 2005, moved to Key Largo then Western North Carolina where he plays music and helps with the Clay County Sheriff Auxiliary.
Ken Conner was born in Dahlonega, Georgia in 1955 and graduated High School in 1973. Ken learned to play music from his dad & uncle. After graduation from Electronics Technology he worked with NCR corporation for 16.1 years and with USPS for 20.4 years. Now Ken is happily retired, pickin' and living in Hayesville.

Our newest From the Archives story, written by 2026 archives work-study student Grace Netanya, follows a few of the school's earliest students, from Bert Smith, who returned to become Farm Manager, to Jeannie James, a gifted weaver whose handwoven dress still lives in our archives today.

Their stories reflect exactly what Olive Dame Campbell and Marguerite hoped the Folk School would be. A place whose impact reaches far beyond a single session!

When someone dies, it is customary to bear witness.

In one Appalachian tradition, clocks are stopped at the moment of death, signaling an intentional pause in time.

Here at the Folk School, where creativity is rooted in community, generosity, and shared tradition, we pause to honor the light-filled spirit of Dolly Rebecca Parton.

We give thanks for the example she set: a life marked by goodness, generosity, artistry, and unabashed adornment.

Today, our Tennessee neighbors observe an official day of mourning for a humanitarian and global icon, joined by countless people around the world.

We invite you to reflect on the joy and kindness Dolly shared, and on how her life reflects what the Folk School holds dear: art made with love, hands joined in community, and common ground found across divides.

Losing someone beloved is a deeply communal experience, and this loss feels that way, as though we have all lost a cherished friend who looked beyond divisions and sought ways to bring people together.

Dolly, we honor your creativity, your devotion to your art, and the legacy of love you leave for us all. 🦋

The final note of a beautiful series. 🎶

Our last Centennial Sounds concert is a big one! On Monday, Sept. 14, the Jake Blount Band takes the Festival Barn stage, joined by Hubby Jenkins of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Hannah Mayree of The Black Banjo Reclamation Project. Three artists exploring the African and African American roots of old-time music and the banjo, together for one night.

Doors at 6 p.m., music at 7, with The Ark serving dinner. Tickets are $25 for adults and $5 for youth.
