On This Day in History: Humanity Sees the Far Side of the Moon

On October 7, 1959, the Soviet spacecraft Luna 3 took the first photographs of the far side of the Moon.

Luna 3's photographs revealed that the far side of the moon looks surprisingly different than the side we are familiar with, including many more craters and far fewer of the dark volcanic plains we see on the near side.

Before Luna 3, no one had ever seen what the other side of the Moon looked like. The spacecraft sent back 29 photographs.

Pop quiz! Why do we always see the same side of the Moon? Type your answer in the comments!
