Read to Grow We promote language & literacy skills for children & support families as their babiesโ€™ first teachers Read to Grow helps build literacy right from birth.

We are the only statewide nonprofit organization that connects with parents in the hospital setting and prepares them to take an active role in their child's literacy development from day one. To help parents create language-rich homes in which children can develop critical early skills, we provide books to families and to the program that interact with infants, toddlers, and school-age children and their parents.

Itโ€™s Celebrate Babies Week! ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’›

Itโ€™s never too early to start sharing the joy of books. From the very beginning, babies are learning, listening, bonding, and discovering the world around them. Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re proud to put books into the hands of families from the very start.

Hereโ€™s to celebrating babies, the people who love them, and all the little moments that help them grow! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ“–

So much has been happening at Read to Grow recently! ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’› Hereโ€™s a look at a few of the wonderful moments and partnerships weโ€™ve been part of:

๐Ÿ“– Our team participated in a workshop with the HELLO Lab focused on creating more inclusive storytimes and learning practical ways to support children who are D/deaf and hard of hearing.

๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ“š And our amazing friends at Citizens are lending a hand! Their volunteer group, including our founding board member Lisa Maass, helped assemble Popcorn & PJs packages for this yearโ€™s program.

๐Ÿ‘ถ We joined the Quiet Corner Community Baby Shower in Putnam, hosted by TEEG, alongside our partners from the Northeast Early Childhood Council.

Weโ€™re so grateful for the people and partnerships that help make our work possible! โค๏ธ

Last Monday marked a huge milestone for Read to Grow! ๐Ÿ’› With the launch of the Newborn Literacy Project at UConn Health Waterbury Hospital and Saint Maryโ€™s Hospital in Waterbury, Read to Grow is now statewide, bringing the gift of early literacy to families in every birthing hospital across Connecticut.

Through this statewide initiative, families receive a free board book along with literacy tips and share stories with their babies from the very beginning.

Weโ€™re so proud of this milestone and incredibly grateful to our hospital partners who are helping us put books in the hands of Connecticutโ€™s newest readers. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’›

Hispanic Heritage Month is an especially meaningful time for us at Read to Grow. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ“š Weโ€™re celebrating the richness of Hispanic and Latino cultures, languages, stories, and traditions with books that encourage children to see themselves and their communities reflected in what they read.

Here are a few titles we encourage families to read:

๐Ÿ“š Spanish Is My Superpower! by Maria Correa, illustrated by Shane Clester
๐Ÿ“š Book Fiesta! by Pat Mora, illustrated by Rafael Lรณpez
๐Ÿ“š Rosaโ€™s Big Pizza Experiment by Jessica Spanyol
๐Ÿ“š Lola en la biblioteca by Anna McQuinn, illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw
๐Ÿ“š Lupe Lopez: Reading Rock Star! by e.E. Charlton-Trujillo and Pat Zietlow Miller, illustrated by Joe Cepeda
๐Ÿ“š The Little Red Hen / La gallinita roja by Shannon Anderson, illustrated by Gal Weizman

We believe every child deserves books that celebrate who they are and introduce them to the cultures and perspectives that make our communities so special. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ“–
