We may find it astonishing to think of someone, let alone a prophet, attempting to run from God, but the more amazing truth is that God pursued him. This is the true marvel of the book of Jonah, that God would pursue stubborn rebellious people in order to bring them to a knowledge of the truth, and the danger of their sin. This is what the book of Jonah is about: God's mercy and compassion which was patient with a self-righteous and stubborn old prophet, and which patiently calls men and women today to turn from their unbelief to faith in Jesus Christ, the Savior, the Son of the Living God. Join us this Wednesday at 6 pm for our family meal where the children will be learning about the grace of God in the book of Jonah.

The world may gloat over the seeming weakness of God's people, even when they fall under His discipline, but Obadiah reminds us, that the LORD is king and judge, not the nations of this world. He has sworn, and will not change His mind that His Kingdom will be established, and that "Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion to rule Mount Esau, and the Kingdom shall be the LORD's" (Obadiah v.21). In the same way, the world jeered and mocked Christ as He hung on the cross for the sins of His people, yet now He is risen and victorious, and returning in glory, in Salvation, and in judgment. Join us this Wednesday night at 6 pm in the fellowship hall as we enjoy a meal, followed by a devotional; the children's class will be looking at the book of Obadiah.

Does God's mercy mean I can now get away with whatever I want? By no means! Yet we often times live as if that was the case. In Amos' day the people of Israel to see the Day of the Lord, that is, the day of God's judgment, because they wanted to see their enemies get what they deserve, yet God sends Amos to them to show them that, on that day, they will get what they deserve to, because they have forsaken their covenant relationship with God. This is because God does not save His people to enable them to sin, but so that they would "lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day." (2 Peter 3:11b). Join us on Wednesday for our family meal at 6 pm in the fellowship hall! Following this there will be a devotional and lesson for the children on the book of Amos.

In speaking of the return of Christ and the final judgment, the Apostle Peter asks:
"Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." -2 Peter 3:11-13
Like Peter, prophet Joel calls people to take the Day of the Lord seriously, to turn away from their stubborn hearts and disobedience, which will bring God's judgment upon them. For the people of Joel's time, this was pictured as a terrible swarm of destroying locusts, which was likely a picture of the Babylonian army that would descend upon Jerusalem and destroy it in 587/586 B.C.
The question before us is, if God takes sin so seriously, shouldn't we? Should we treat His grace as an allowance to sin, or should we live in light of that coming day? Not if fear, but in faith, eagerly anticipating Christ's return, hoping to hear those blessed words "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Hosea was a prophet who was given a hard task: God called him to marry a woman who would prove to be unfaithful. Why? Because it would serve as a picture of God's relationship with His people, whom He saved from slavery in Egypt, yet who turned to other lovers (idols, money, pleasure, etc.) at just about every turn. We would be outraged if our spouse did that to us--and rightly so--yet we generally live as if God should tolerate our wayward hearts. Hosea depicts the real grief and outrage of our sin before the God of grace, yet His determination to pursue His people--not with unconditional love, but something better--something that rescues them from their sin and folly, and brings them into His eternal Kingdom. It is for good reason this book is often called the Gospel According to Hosea, for in it we see the love of Christ displayed, who paid the cost to save us from the judgment we deserve.

History is filled with the rise and fall of many kingdoms: one party in power replaced by another, yet none of this is random or by chance: the LORD is the one in charge of the flow of history: He establishes kingdoms, and He brings them down to the dust. The book of Daniel reminds us of this, and shows us where our hope and confidence should rest in an unchanging world: On the God who does not change. The book of Lamentations displays the progress from grief over sin to restoration with God--a process that can only happen when one humbles themselves before God and acknowledges their sin. There is great hope for those who trust in God's promise to forgive; our faithfulness may be weak, but His is great, renewing every morning.

Sin brings sorrow. It is a simple one, but one which humanity has historically had a hard time grasping. The prophet Jeremiah is sometimes called the weeping prophet, and for good reason, for he declared to the rebellious people of Judah the sorrow which was to befall them for their refusal to trust God and His unfailing promises. Yet Jeremiah also spoke of hope, pointing forward to a time when God would write His law on His people's hearts, and He would forgive them and remember their sin no more. What is the meaning of life? Sometimes this is treated as a mystery without an answer, yet the Bible is clear: The LORD, high and lifted up is the center of the universe. He is the creator of all things, He is the one to directs the flow of history. To Him alone belongs glory and worship, and from Him alone comes our salvation. Everything which God gives to us, has one purpose: That He would be high and lifted up in our lives. Join us tonight at 6:00 pm in the fellowship hall for our fellowship meal, and a brief devotional.
