Thanking our friend Ingrid for so many years of warm laughs, potlucks, and whip smart remarks and our shared bond over film. Rest in peace Ingrid, we will remember you.

Deutsches Haus at NYU fondly remembers Ingrid Scheib-Rothbart, who sadly passed away on January 31 in Berlin. Ingrid was a dear friend and long-standing supporter of Deutsches Haus at NYU. She was kind and thoughtful, always passionate about film and intercultural dialogue, and endlessly curious about the world. She will be missed by many, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Ingrid was born in Wuppertal, Germany, in 1930. She trained as a translator and worked from 1962 until 1995 at Goethe House New York/Goethe-Institut New York, organizing cultural programming. As of 1979, she was Program Coordinator for Film and Media for the Goethe-Institut in New York. Her work was crucial for introducing audiences in the United States to New German Cinema and its filmmakers, and Ingrid also played an important role in promoting the work of the DEFA filmmakers in the U.S.

Ingrid served as a member of the International Jury of the Berlin Film Festival in 1985, the Short Film Festival Oberhausen in 1987 and 1996, the Mannheim Film Festival in 1988, and the EXPO International Short Film Festival New York in 2001 and 2002. After retiring from the Goethe-Institut in 1995, she was a freelance consultant for film and media and also an officer of The Fassbinder Foundation. She was the president of the New York Film/Video Council from 1997 to 1999, and later an officer of its board. In 1995, Ingrid received the Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany, and in 2018 the DAADAA (German Academic Exchange Service Alumni Association) Award for International Exchange.
