Still dealing with stubborn Achilles pain?

Maybe it isn't your Achilles tendon.

Or maybe it is the Achilles—but it's also the paratenon, retrocalcaneal bursa, or another nearby structure contributing to your symptoms.

These conditions can feel remarkably similar, yet they don't always respond to the same treatment.

That's one reason runners often spend months stretching, strengthening, or resting... without making meaningful progress.

Before asking, "What's the best exercise?" ask: "Am I treating the right tissue?"

An accurate diagnosis changes everything—from the exercises you choose to your running modifications, expected recovery timeline, and return-to-run plan.

If you've been doing "all the right things" and your Achilles still isn't improving, it may be time to question the diagnosis—not just the treatment.

Cruise intervals are one of the most effective ways to train your lactate threshold.

Instead of running continuously for 25–30 minutes, you divide the workout into shorter intervals with brief recovery periods.

For example: 🏃 5 × 5 minutes @ threshold with 1 minute of easy jogging between reps.

Why?

Short intervals allow you to accumulate a large amount of work near lactate threshold without letting blood lactate rise excessively.

As Casado et al. (2023) explains:

"The duration of each repetition is too short for blood lactate to rise above LT2, and the recovery period is long enough for blood lactate to return near LT1—but not long enough to fall below that threshold."

In other words, you spend more time in the physiological zone you're trying to train, rather than drifting well above or below it.

The result?

✅ The same threshold training volume

✅ Less accumulated fatigue

✅ Higher workout quality

✅ Better recovery

✅ An easier way to build aerobic fitness week after week

Sometimes, breaking a workout into smaller pieces isn't making it easier—it's making it more effective.

Train smarter, not just harder.

Not every run should leave you exhausted.

Threshold training sits in the "sweet spot" of endurance training.

At this intensity, you're working hard enough to recruit both slow- and fast-twitch muscle fibers while keeping fatigue under control. That means you can accumulate more quality work, recover faster, and repeat it again later in the week.

It's one of the reasons threshold training has become a cornerstone of modern distance running programs.

The goal isn't to survive the workout.

The goal is to accumulate high-quality aerobic training that improves:

🏃 Lactate clearance
🏃 Mitochondrial adaptations
🏃 Running economy
🏃 Your ability to sustain faster paces

The best runners aren't the ones who train the hardest every day.

They're the ones who string together months and years of consistent, high-quality training.

Train smarter. Recover better. Improve consistently.

Double threshold training has become one of the hottest topics in endurance sports—but it's also one of the most misunderstood.

The goal isn't to run harder. It's to accumulate more quality work around lactate threshold while keeping fatigue under control.

Research suggests that splitting one long threshold session into two shorter sessions may reduce heart rate, blood lactate, and perceived exertion while allowing athletes to complete the same total training volume. That's one reason many elite runners use this approach.

That said, context matters.

Double threshold is generally reserved for highly trained athletes with years of aerobic development and the ability to tolerate very high training loads. For most runners, the biggest gains still come from consistently doing the basics well:

🏃 Easy running
🏃 Threshold workouts
🏃 Long runs
🏃 Strength training
🏃 Recovering appropriately

Don't mistake an elite training method for a shortcut. The best training plan isn't the most complicated one—it's the one that's appropriate for your current fitness, goals, and ability to recover.

Want to keep running strong for the long haul? Cross training might be your best-kept secret. 🚴🏊

Different sports - cycling vs swimming vs rowing - have different demands and therefore stress the body differently.

Yet, the body only knows stimulus. You can still train the heart for running without the same damage running does.

For example, as we age, the body becomes less effective at:

1️⃣ Getting oxygen into the body (lungs)
2️⃣ Delivering oxygen to the muscles (heart & blood vessels)
3️⃣ Using oxygen within the muscles (capillaries & mitochondria)

This is where cross training earns its keep. Biking, swimming, rowing — these all challenge the heart and cardiovascular system without the repetitive impact of running, helping you maintain that engine even when you can't run as much as you'd like.

That makes it especially valuable for:
🔹 Runners dealing with a nagging injury who still want to protect their fitness
🔹 Masters runners looking to sustain cardiovascular function as long as possible

Running is what you love, but it doesn't have to be the only tool keeping your heart and lungs strong. Cross training is how you protect the engine so running stays sustainable for years to come.

Lactate has one of the worst reputations in endurance sports.

For decades, it was blamed for fatigue, burning legs, and poor performance. We now know that's not true.

Lactate is constantly produced—even during easy running—and serves as an important fuel source for your muscles, heart, and brain. Blood lactate is simply one of the best markers we have for understanding how your body responds to increasing exercise intensity.

Understanding lactate threshold isn't about chasing a specific mmol/L value. It's about identifying the training intensities that best develop your aerobic system and improve endurance performance.

Have you ever had a lactate threshold test?

You already know the components: keep training. Do your rehab exercises. Sleep. Eat well. Manage stress. Wear good shoes.

That's not the hard part.

It's How.

The hard part is fitting those pieces into your actual life. You're human, which means you're complex, inconsistent, and pulled in a dozen directions at once. Knowing the variables was never the problem.

The problem is fitting them together, and progressing anyway. 🧩

How do you keep training despite knee pain? For this athlete, it was one small tweak that allowed the knee to breathe, keep training for the most part, and recover fully.

Many people are dealing with lingering pain symptoms that aren't bad enough to address. Don't let the fire grow. Resolve it, feel and perform better.
