Started doorknocking yesterday, it is alot of fun getting out to meet people, got great responses from people I visited, learned alot about what is on everyone's minds.

If you have kids in the district you are probably familiar with the statewide tests that are taken every year. These tests are taken in schools all over the state, and, are required by state and federal laws governing education. State testing is not a perfect measure, but, it gives us useful information about how our students re doing. The important question for the school board is what we learn from the results and what we do to improve.

Good schools help our community in many ways, far beyond what happens in the school buildings.

If you have purchased a house and worked with a realtor, you probably asked your realtor what school district the home was in. Most real estate listings indicate what school district the property is located in. I know many people who purchased a home in this area primarily because of the school district.

We all benefit from good schools, even if we do not have children in them.

A possible new law has been discussed at the state level that would transfer responsibility for teacher health insurance costs from the local districts to the state. This would help our district, and, most other rural and small town school districts who are struggling to cover rising insurance costs.

Over the next month all of our schools will hold open houses for new students, returning students are generally welcome to. My kids liked going to their open houses, meeting their new teachers, seeing where their lockers would be, it made the first day of school alot less stressful. If you have a child who will be going to a new school this year check out the open house, you will probably be glad you did.

My kids, and some of yours are doing summer music lessons at Forestview. I am glad that we have a music program here which provides that opportunity, kids in many districts are not that fortunate.

I play soccer some early mornings with a great group of people, during the warm months we use the high school fields. When we are there I often see people running on the track, or otherwise enjoying the large open area near downtown by the river. This is an example of how the schools benefit all of us, whether we have children in them or not. I believe that there are other opportunities to utilized school district facilities for the benefit of the public, I will look into that when I am on the board.

Yesterday a rally against bullying was held, promoted by the two recent su***des of Forestview students. Bullying can be a cause of su***de, children have less resilience against peer criticism than adults, what can seem like harmless fun to some can be devastating to others. One of the important jobs of our new superintendent will be controlling bullying.

For those of you who have kids in soccer or hockey you are probably familiar with the National Sports Center in Blaine, they have numerous soccer and hockey tournaments each year. My son has been at a soccer tournament there this week, has been a fun time, but, challenging due to the heat, and the smoke.

Enjoy your summer, whatever you and your kids are getting up to.
