✏️ How does THIS help with handwriting?

You might be surprised how much handwriting development happens WITHOUT a pencil!

When children push, pull, lift, and maneuver heavy objects, they’re engaging in something called proprioceptive heavy work.

Proprioception is our body’s ability to sense where we are in space, how we’re moving, and how much force we’re using.

And these experiences support some pretty important developmental skills!

🌿 Core stability — Helping children maintain an upright, supported posture for writing.

🌿 Shoulder strength and stability — Creating a stable foundation for controlled movements of the hands and fingers.

🌿 Bilateral coordination — Helping both sides of the body work together.

🌿 Body awareness and motor planning — Supporting children’s ability to coordinate and control their movements.

🌿 Force regulation — Helping children develop awareness of how much pressure they’re using, a skill that’s also important when holding and using a pencil.

At Organic Roots Schoolhouse, we recognize that developing academic skills involves so much more than practicing them at a desk.

We intentionally make room for movement, exploration, and meaningful physical challenges alongside direct academic instruction.

Because sometimes, preparing little hands for writing starts with giving their whole bodies opportunities to work. 💚

🌿 What if we started seeing play differently?

To the outside world, this might look like a child simply walking across a fallen tree.

But look a little closer.

She’s testing her balance. Adjusting her movements. Making decisions. Assessing challenges. Building confidence in what her body can do.

And she’s doing it all through something that comes naturally to children: PLAY.

At Organic Roots Schoolhouse, we believe that meaningful learning doesn’t always require a worksheet, a lesson plan, or even an adult leading the way.

Sometimes, our most important role as educators is to create an environment where children have the freedom to explore, take appropriate risks, solve problems, and discover their own capabilities.

Because play isn’t separate from education.

🍁 More than just a day in the woods.

It’s a place where curiosity is encouraged, questions turn into discoveries, and learning happens through real experiences.

Where a simple walk through the forest becomes a science investigation. Where children make predictions, collect data, test ideas, and discover the world around them.

But some of the most meaningful lessons are found in the moments we never planned for. 🌿

When children are given the freedom to explore, they’re also learning to see possibilities. To think creatively. To approach the unfamiliar with an open mind. To look at a fallen branch, a pile of leaves, or an open stretch of forest and imagine what could be.

And sometimes, that takes practice!

Imagination, problem-solving, resourcefulness, and independent thinking are skills we intentionally nurture through forest play. We want children to become comfortable exploring possibilities rather than always waiting to be told what comes next.

Along the way, they’re building friendships, confidence, collaboration, perseverance, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

🌲 One story. One nature journal. Endless opportunities for learning.

What started with a read-aloud about fallen trees turned into a hands-on investigation of our very own forest!

Armed with nature journals, we headed into the woods to discover how nurse logs continue giving back to the ecosystem long after a tree has fallen.

Our young scientists observed, classified, and collected real data, using tally marks to document evidence of food, shelter, and moisture supporting forest life. 🍄

And just like that, reading, literacy, vocabulary, writing, mathematics, and science came together in one meaningful learning experience.

This is what I love about nature-based education. We don’t have to separate learning into little boxes. When children are curious, connected, and actively investigating the world around them, the learning happens naturally.

The forest isn’t just our classroom. It’s part of our curriculum. 🌿

I’ve found myself a little emotional lately thinking about the things that matter most when we educate a child.

Because in the middle of reading, math, curriculum, and all the things we’re supposed to teach, it’s easy to forget that some of the most important parts of education can’t be measured at all.

It’s being known.

And I mean truly known.

The kind of knowing that happens through hundreds of little conversations and ordinary moments together.

Knowing their sense of humor. Their quirks. What makes them light up. What makes them shut down. When they need encouragement and when they need space.

It’s having enough time together that relationships aren’t something we have to schedule into the day—they’re simply woven throughout it.

And when we have that kind of relationship with a child, we get to see the whole child.

A struggling reader isn’t just a struggling reader.

A child having a hard day isn’t a behavior problem.

A mistake isn’t who they are.

Because when you truly know a child, you have context. You know their heart. You know their strengths alongside the things they’re still learning.

That is something I’ve been especially grateful for at Organic Roots lately.

Our conversations happen while we’re walking through the woods, working around the table, eating together, building something, or investigating something we found outside.

There is time for relationships to grow naturally here.

And somewhere along the way, they stop feeling like simply “students in my class.”

I grow to love them. ❤️

Of course we learn to read. We learn math. We write, investigate, practice phonics, and build number sense.

But there is also room for childhood.

For relationships. Imagination. Movement. Curiosity. Conversation. Nature. Mistakes. Laughter.

Because these children are more than a grade level.

They’re more than their hardest day.

They’re more than the mistakes they make.

They’re whole little people becoming who they’re going to be.

And I want them to remember that the place where they learned was also a place where they were deeply seen, deeply known, and deeply loved.

Goodness, I’m grateful I get to build a school where there is space for exactly that. 🌲❤️

Lately, I’ve found myself thinking about the things that matter most when we educate a child.

Because beyond reading, math, and all the things we’re supposed to teach, there are things that can’t be measured.

Like being truly known.

Not just knowing a child’s interests, but knowing them through hundreds of little conversations and ordinary moments together. Their humor. Their quirks. What lights them up. What shuts them down. When they need encouragement, and when they just need someone beside them.

At Organic Roots, relationships aren’t something we have to schedule into the day. They’re woven throughout it.

And when you truly know a child, you see beyond a single moment.

A struggling reader isn’t just a struggling reader.

A hard day doesn’t make them a difficult kid.

A mistake isn’t who they are.

You know their heart. You know their strengths alongside the things they’re still learning.

That’s what I’ve been especially grateful for lately.

There is time here for academics, but also for conversations in the woods, laughter around the table, friendships, imagination, curiosity, mistakes, and childhood.

These kids are more than a grade level or their hardest day.

They’re whole little people becoming who they’re going to be.

And goodness, I’m grateful I get to build a school where they have the space to be deeply seen, deeply known, and deeply loved. 🌲❤️

Sometimes the best lessons are the ones you never planned. 🐍🌿

Today, a tiny visitor made its way into our classroom—and suddenly, the lesson plan could wait.

We observed. We wondered. We compared. We researched. We documented. And eventually, we used the evidence we had gathered to identify our little visitor as a red-bellied snake.

But there was SO much more learning happening beneath the surface.

🐍 Comparing, contrasting & using evidence
📖 Building nonfiction vocabulary
📓 Literacy through nature journaling
✏️ Writing with a real purpose
🔬 Scientific drawing, labels & captions
🌿 Connecting science, literacy & the natural world

One of my favorite things about teaching this way is having the freedom to recognize when something happening right in front of us is worth following.

We can come back to the lesson plan.

But the snake that just wandered into our classroom? That curiosity is happening RIGHT NOW. ❤️

Sometimes the most meaningful learning isn’t on the lesson plan.

When curiosity shows up in our classroom, we make room for it. 🌿

🌱 WE’RE LOOKING FOR 3 NEW STUDENTS!

Our Primary group at Organic Roots Schoolhouse is growing, and we have room for three more K–2 students to join us.

Organic Roots is a small, nature-based school where strong academics and childhood get to exist together. Our days include small-group reading and math, hands-on learning, time outdoors, creating, exploring, building, problem-solving—and plenty of room for kids to move, wonder, and be kids.

With an intentionally small class, I’m able to really know each learner, meet them where they are, and give them the support and challenge they need as they grow.
