Federal retirement processing is moving in the right direction.

OPM’s retirement backlog dropped nearly 38% in August, the largest monthly percentage decline since OPM began publishing the data in 2012. Processing times also fell from 109 days in July to about 79 days in August.

For federal employees thinking about retirement, this is encouraging news. But faster processing addresses only one part of retirement.

Before you submit your retirement paperwork, you should understand what happens after your last paycheck. What will your FERS pension look like? When should you claim Social Security? What happens to your FEHB, FEGLI, and TSP? Most importantly, how much income will you have each month, and will it support the retirement you have planned?

Retirement readiness begins before you apply.

The federal retirement backlog is showing a sharp decline, with August 2026 one of the steepest drops on record, as the government continues to work through a surge in retirement claims that began last fall amid widespread federal workforce changes. According to the Office of Personnel Management

HOT OFF THE PRESSES!

Here’s what every federal retiree should know about accessing their personnel record (eOPF) after separation.

OPM just launched the eOPF Documents Request Service (myopf.opm.gov), a self-service portal letting separated employees request their folder online instead of going through agency HR or NPRC.

Key points:
• Verify identity through Login.gov (ID plus SSN required).
• Wait at least 30 days after separation before requesting.
• Download link expires in 24 hours, so save it immediately.
• If your file isn’t found, your next step depends on your separation date.
- After 1951 goes through NPRC.
- Before 1952 falls under National Archives.

Your personnel record verifies prior service, supports retirement claims, and matters for security clearance reviews. We have had experiences where it has taken as little as 10 minutes to complete. It is better to straighten out your SF-50s before you retire so it does not delay OPM.

OPM’s new online service helps separated employees access records they may need years after leaving government.

The Federal Benefits Information Center is proud to introduce our newest educator, Angela McCullough. A former FAA executive, who after embracing retirement and navigating the DRP, found that there is a void regarding federal benefits education, especially during the retirement process where it is so important to make educated and informed decisions. Angela shares a servant heart, wanting to share her stories with friends and federal peers. We are proud to welcome Angela into our educator circle.
