Dyslexia isn't about seeing letters backward. That myth has done real damage, because it sends parents looking for the wrong thing entirely. Dyslexia is a difficulty identifying speech sounds and learning how they connect to letters and words — decoding. It sits in the parts of the brain that process language. People with dyslexia have normal intelligence and usually normal vision. What it actually looks like: trouble with letter and word recognition. Reading that's slow and effortful. Struggling to hold onto the meaning of what was just read. Vocabulary that doesn't grow the way it should, because reading is too expensive to do for fun. There's no cure. There is very good instruction. Early assessment and intervention give the best outcomes — and it's never too late to start. If any of that sounds familiar, that's worth acting on, wherever you end up doing it.

Art isn't the reward for finishing the real work. Here, art is part of the work. We incorporate art daily across content areas to reinforce what's being learned.
Not as a break from academics — as a route into them. Here's why it matters for our students specifically: art is subjective. There is no exactly-right answer to get wrong. For a kid who spends most of the school day being measured against a standard they keep falling short of, that's not a small thing. It's also a communication channel. Students with dyslexia, ADHD, and sensory differences often express thoughts and feelings through art that they can't get out any other way. The idea makes it out of their head intact, without going through the bottleneck. Confidence in, expression out. Every day.
