Psychology at Montana State University stretches all the way back to its earliest days. This image comes from the second catalogue of the university in 1893. (You can see the digital version here - https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uiuo.ark:/13960/t5j97qg8q&seq=44).

After the very short-lived term of the first president of the Agricultural College of the State of Montana (as it was then), James R. Reid was appointed to the role. Reports suggest one major focus under his leadership was clamping down on the debauchery around the town and at the new college. As part of his curriculum on “Mental and Moral Science”, seniors took a class in Psychology.

Some of the very earliest texts in psychology would have been available for this course, including William James's The Principles of Psychology (1890), James Mark Baldwin’s Elements of Psychology (1893), and George Trumbull Ladd’s Elements of Physiological Psychology (1887).
