We read The Three Little Pigs this morning and, of course, that carried right over into playtime. Before long the kids were building houses out of straw, sticks and bricks and deciding who was going to be the wolf. 🐷

I love seeing where a story goes once the kids get ahold of it. πŸ“šβœ¨

🎨🌿 A little watercolor, a handful of leaves, and a whole lot of imagination.
We had such a sweet afternoon at the Farmers Market today! Children stopped by our Creative Arts table to watercolor their own oceans and add tiny fish made from real leaves. πŸŒŠπŸƒπŸŸ
I loved seeing how completely different every ocean became. Some were calm and blue, some were wonderfully colorful, and every little school of leaf fish found its own place to swim.
Thank you to all of the families who stopped to create with us. I’m having so much fun bringing a little piece of Creative Arts out into our community. πŸ’›

This afternoon, August 19th, we'll be celebrating the end of an incredible summer with popsicles, and a chance for families to spend a little time together.

I love popsicles, but my favorite part is watching children introduce their families to their friends, and watching our community grow🍦🌿

One of our stories last week followed a little boat down Montana's rivers, and before long the children had turned it into a song, and a game.

That's one of my favorite things about preschool. A story becomes a painting. The painting becomes pretend play. The pretend play becomes something they'll probably still be talking about tomorrow. Children have a wonderful way of making learning feel like play. πŸ’¦ 🌿

As summer winds down, I've been thinking about my favorite part of the beginning of every school year. It isn't the fresh art supplies or the newly organized classroom.

It's watching a child who was nervous on the first day become completely comfortable a few weeks later. The child who quietly held a parent's hand in September is suddenly running in to see their friends.

Some of my own favorite friendships have started right here in our classroom. I can't wait to watch another group of children find their place together. 🎨🌿

🎨🌿 Creative Arts is heading to the Farmers Market!
We’re so excited to be joining the Farmers Market with a little Nature Art Studio just for kids. We'll be set up by the playground today from 5-8pm!
For our first project, children can stop by and create their own woodland person, adding color and real leaves to turn each one into something completely their own. πŸƒβœ¨
Art, nature, imagination, and a beautiful summer day in the park. It feels like a pretty perfect combination.
The art activity is completely free, so come find us, create something, and say hello! We’d love to see some familiar Creative Arts faces and meet some new ones too. πŸ’›

On one of our walks, someone spotted tansy and announced what it was before I even had a chance to say anything. Then they helped everyone else find one.

One of my favorite parts of teaching is watching children realize they know something. Their confidence grows almost instantly, and before long they're teaching each other.

This week we've been painting flowers, pressing them into clay, reading stories, and spending as much time outside as possible. Turns out nature makes a pretty wonderful classroom. 🌸🌿

Sometimes people ask what makes Creative Arts different.

It's hard to explain: It's not just the art. Or the nature walks. Or the stories.

It's the feeling in the room. Children have time here. Time to finish what they're making. Time to ask questions. Time to notice things. There isn't a rush toward the next activity.

Some of the best learning happens because we slowed down long enough to let it. ✨🌿

People sometimes ask me what children learn at preschool.

Of course we paint. Read stories. Learn letters. Count.

But I hope they're learning something even bigger. To be curious. To be kind. To notice beauty. To ask questions. To feel confident trying something new.

Those are the things that stay with us long after preschool ends. 🎨🌿

This week we've been looking at artists like Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Po***ck, Kandinsky, Klimt, and Seurat. Every one of them saw the world a little differently. 🎨

Then it was the children's turn. Some painted tiny careful details. Some covered every inch of the paper with color. Some mixed paints just to see what would happen.

I love that children don't compare their artwork. They simply create. Maybe that's something adults should do a little more often too. ✨🌿
