A new four-year, $1.9 million grant will enable a team of collaborators at Montana State University and the University of Montana to continue a program that trains students to better serve individuals with mental health care needs.

David Sands, a professor in MSU College of Agriculture, has studied striga for more than a decade. The purple-flowered w**d causes $7–10 billion in agricultural losses for smallholder farmers across northern Africa each year. Sands’ research focuses on a unique fungus, native to Africa, that can be used as a biocontrol to combat striga damage to agricultural crops like sorghum, millet and okra.
“We were lucky to find such a good biocontrol,” said Sands in the BBC interview. “Without using genetically modified organisms, we were able to find a really good killer fungus (against striga).”

In some areas of Montana, the nearest pediatric dentist may be many miles away, making it challenging for some families to access care. Now, an effort by the Montana State University College of Nursing and its partners to provide dental care and health screenings to children has expanded to the Blackfeet Nation in northwest Montana thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Otto Bremer Trust.
MSU College of Nursing, partners providing pediatric dental care and health screenings to Blackfeet Nation As part of the One Community in Health program, screenings and care for Head Start and Early Head Start students at the Blackfeet Nation are being provided three times this year in classroom settings.

Former president of Ireland Mary Robinson is known as a champion for climate justice, human rights, gender equality and corporate responsibility. She served as Ireland’s first female president from 1990 to 1997 and as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002. Prior to her election as president, she was a prominent member of the Irish Senate. In addition, Robinson led The Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice, served as the United Nation’s secretary-general’s special envoy on climate justice, and authored a book, “Climate Justice: Hope, Resilience and the Fight for a Sustainable Future.”
Robinson will speak at MSU during a virtual event, “Leadership and Climate Justice,” set for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 8. Following Robinson’s remarks, an interactive audience Q&A will be led by MSU President Waded Cruzado.
Before her visit, Robinson spoke with MSU News about climate justice, how education has influenced her life and what gives her hope for the future. The interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Chere LeClair, an MSU architecture graduate and a professor in the Montana State University - College of Arts & Architecture, has been elected to the College of Fellows of The American Institute of Architects.
LeClair was one of just 102 architects from throughout the country to receive one of the most prestigious honors in the architecture profession. LeClair is the first female architect in the state of Montana to receive the honor.
