🌾 MSU winter wheat breeder Sue Mondal has been busy — and two new variety releases are directly aimed at problems Montana producers faced this season.

Sawfly pressure was significant across the Golden Triangle this year, particularly in areas hit by early drought. MT Meadowlark, a new solid-stem variety, addresses that pressure head on. An awned, medium-late maturing semi-dwarf, MT Meadowlark also clears up confusion around Bobcat — the most popular winter wheat variety in Montana last year at 22.2% of acres — which had been showing leaf spotting issues. 🔬

While Bobcat spots appear to be the plant's way of communicating low chloride levels in the soil, they have not impacted yield or quality. This year, growers were seeing fewer spots.

A second concern has been wheat streak mosaic virus, so Mondal released MT Barrett in 2025, carrying a natural WSMV resistance gene — Wsm2 — that provides moderate resistance. With green bridge conditions and volunteer wheat creating ideal WSMV spread conditions across the state in recent years, having a resistant variety in the lineup is timely. 📋
