Spring wheat planting is going strong in Bozeman! Clayton Edwards has been busy planting the newly released MT21074 hard red spring wheat at the Bozeman Health hospital lease!

MT 21074 (MAES release, 2026):
๐ŸŒพ Variety name is pending.
๐ŸŒพ Medium - late maturing hard red spring wheat variety that has better sawfly resistance than Dagmar.
๐ŸŒพ Good yield potential.
๐ŸŒพ Grain protein content and test weight are similar to Dagmar.
๐ŸŒพ End-use quality is good.
๐ŸŒพ Susceptible to plant available aluminum in low pH soils.
๐ŸŒพ Released for rain-fed environments that have high sawfly pressure.
๐ŸŒพ Susceptible to scab (fusarium head blight).

On Thursday, MSU President Brock Tessman made one of his first stops on his inaugural bus tour at the Post Farm! What a great honor it was to have several representatives from different MSU colleges present to welcome President Tessman! His family even got to enjoy a ride in our new combine!

Welcome Dr. Giseli Valentini to the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology as our new Assistant Professor of Pulse Crop Breeding!

Dr. Valentini is an agronomist and holds a Ph.D. in Genetics and Breeding from the Maringa State University, Brazil. She completed postdoctoral training at USDA-ARS in Beltsville, MD, and in the Department of Plant Pathology at NDSU in Fargo, ND. Her research integrates conventional and modern breeding approaches, combining genetics, genomics, and advanced breeding tools to accelerate crop improvement. She first joined Montana State University as a Research Scientist and Interim Pulse Crop Breeder, where she has focused on developing new pea, lentil, and chickpea varieties for Montana. As an Assistant Professor, she will continue advancing pulse crop research and variety development, contribute to the education of future professionals through teaching and mentorship, and actively serve the university and broader community.
