The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year, and it marks the official start of winter! It happens because the Earth is tilted, and during the solstice our part of the world leans farthest away from the Sun. After this day, the sunlight slowly begins to return, and each day becomes a little longer and brighter!
