On May 7, 2024 @ 2:00pm, Ed Lamont presents PLANTING PALM BEACH to the Boca Raton Garden Club.

When the Providencia, a small Spanish brigantine, wrecked on the Atlantic shore of the Lake Worth Region in 1878, everything changed. Its cargo of 20,000 coconuts was salvaged, then planted by frontier settlers giving the region a distinctive look and eventually a new name - Palm Beach. Royal Poinciana, Kapok, and Yellow Tabs later added to the area's semi-tropical splendor.

Where did these exotics come from? How did Palm Beach emerge from a mangrove covered, alligator infested swamp to become a showcase of horticultural resort beauty? Who planted Palm Beach?

Ed Lamont is a Docent at Whitehall - the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in Palm Beach where he’s led over 3,000 guided tours into Florida's Gilded Age history. He speaks at Historical Societies, Daughters/Sons of the American Revolution Chapters, Colonial Dames of America, Woman's Clubs, Mayflower Society, Lake Pioneer Association, and Rotary Clubs throughout Florida.

Ed Lamont leads a book discussion of Candice Millard's narrative history RIVER OF THE GODS: Genius, Courage, and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile on Tuesday, September 20 at 5:30 pm.

The event is live at the Gioconda & Joseph King Library on the Society of the Four Arts campus in Palm Beach. A virtual broadcast option is available as well.

For millennia the location of the Nile River’s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke were sent by the Royal Geographical Society to claim the prize for England. They endured tremendous hardships, illness, and constant setbacks. Worse, from the start the two men clashed.

Deep in the African interior, Burton became too sick to press on. Speke did and claimed he found the source of the Nile at a gigantic lake he christened Lake Victoria. When they returned to England, Speke rushed to take credit, disparaging Burton. The two became venomous enemies.

Yet there was a third man whose exploits were even more extraordinary. Sidi Mubarak Bombay was enslaved, then shipped from his home village in East Africa to India. Decades later Bombay was freed. He traveled back to Africa and employed resourcefulness, linguistic prowess, and raw courage to forge a living as guide of African explorers. Bombay gained fame worldwide, all but forgotten today.

In River of the Gods, Candice Millard wrote a story of courage and adventure, set against the backdrop of the race to exploit Africa by the colonial powers.

Ed facilitates TALK OF KINGS book discussions at the Four Arts King Library and gives gallery talks at the Esther B. O'Keeffe Art Gallery. He serves as a docent at the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, leads historical walking tours of the Breakers Hotel, and has been a guest history lecturer at Palm Beach Atlantic University.
