Kindergarten session number 2 was tons of fun! The letters this week are T, P, and F. The sight words were: a, I, and. We practiced writing these letters and words and practicing identifying them with activities and songs. The kids played games to work on letter and sight word identification. In math we continued counting numbers to 20. We ended the session by reading the book “The Quacken” by Justin Colón. All of the picture books I’ve chosen this summer are SSYRA Jr. books, which have been chosen to expose young readers to high quality stories.

Second grade! This week we worked on plural endings and the sight words: two, does. The kids played sight word and critical thinking games. They read a short passage and answered reading comprehension questions. In math we continued practicing the skills they were taught last year with a comprehensive review. We ended the session by reading the book “The Quacken” by Justin Colón and practiced analyzing the text. All of the picture books I’ve chosen this summer are SSYRA Jr. books, which have been chosen to expose young readers to high quality stories.

Here are questions you can ask your child when you are reading at home to practicing analyzing a text:
What is the same in the book?
What did you notice is different??
What did you notice that was funny or surprising?
What did the author do to make the story interesting?

Future kindergartners! All of the students introduced themselves and we became friends for the summer. The letters we focused on today were: A, M, S. The kids practiced the sounds and writing each letter with different activities and songs. We wrote and practiced reading the sight words “I” and “the”. In math the students reviewed numbers 1-10. Some of us weren’t able to finish the sheet, so feel free to complete at home. We ended by reading the story “The Fastest Tortoise in Town” by Howard Calvert.

Soon to be first graders! We focused on the short a sound and the sight words: a, as, can, did. The kids practiced with different activities and sounds. We played a sight word game to review frequently used words. In math, we reviewed counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s. The students answered a writing prompt, and we focused on beginning sentences with a capital letter, using finger spaces, and ending with punctuation. We ended the session by reading “The Fastest Tortoise in Town” by Howard Calvert and working on the reading comprehension skill: retelling.

Summer classes have begun! We had a great first session today! In phonics, we worked on reviewing silent e words and the sight words: who, by, my, one, once. The students practiced these skills with activities and songs. They played a sight word game to review frequently used words. We answered a writing prompt and focused on starting with a capital, using finger spaces, and ending in proper punctuation. In math we will review the skills the students were taught during the school year. The sheets cover topics such as: addition, greater than, fact families, ordinal numbers, subtraction and number order. We will do 1-2 sheets with the students each week. We ended the session by reading “The Fastest Tortoise in Town” by Howard Calvert and working on the reading comprehension skill: retelling.

Here are songs you can play at home to review the above skills:

When you’re reading with your child you can ask these questions to practice retelling:
What is the main thing that happened in the story?
Who are the characters? Where did it take place?
How did the story end?
Who is telling the story?
