Who needs tutoring? Everyone who is not making straight A's or who is not going to a school that teaches to mastery.

I HATE the way that most schools introduce information and then move on without making sure that students have mastered the information. I have tutored several children who have been passed on from grade to grade without learning much of anything. I had a fifth grade boy that couldn't add zero to another number and get the right answer.

Usually these children decide that they are not smart, but most of these children are smart; they are not learning well because the schools are doing a poor job of teaching them. I had one student who was in danger of being retained in fourth grade, but with tutoring, she got straight A's on several of her report cards in middle school.

Let's start a conversation about how to improve education. Please comment on what I have written--if you agree or disagree.

I have a big complaint against teachers who become very defensive when their students aren't making the progress that they think they should. Their attitudes are, "I have taught other children, and they have done well. If your child isn't learning, it is your fault and your child's fault, and you need to fix him." They may not say this directly, but it is implied. This shows a lack of sensitivity and professionalism, but in my experience, it is not uncommon.

Parents don't know how to respond to these kinds of teachers in these situations. What the teacher is trying to tell you is that she is a good teacher and that your child's lack of progress isn't her fault. Maybe that is true. Some children do present challenges, but it is always up to the teacher to find the solution. The teacher is the professional, and if she can't fix the child, how does she expect the parents fix him?

Do you agree or disagree? Have you run into teachers like this?
