Last week's EcoExplorer campers spend some time counting Japanese beetles on different flowers to hypothesize which flowers the beetles like the most. Here, campers are comparing marigolds and rose mallows.
Did you know that although marigolds have a great reputation for repelling insects, not all marigolds do? We found out these yellow marigolds actually seemed to attract the Japanese beetles, and discovered the best repellent marigolds are French and Mexican marigolds.

Face painting, fireflies, and glow-in-the-dark slime, oh my!!
Microscopes, bug nets, and science, oh yeah!!

Everyone loves fireflies, but how do they make their light—and why? At our 6th annual Firefly Festival, we'll share the science behind fireflies, outdoor activities, crafts, and games. Following a brief introduction for all ages, we will catch, release and watch fireflies, one of nature’s grand spectacles.
This year's fesival will be held on the summer solstice, Friday June 21, from 8-9:30. Rain date will be Saturday, June 22.

Using creativity to save the world, we'll design and paint all purpose canvas bags that will be stuffed with many other eco-friendly crafts, from the soft melodies of bamboo wind chimes and rainsticks to native pollinator seed balls and herbal teas fresh from the herb garden.
