Our final goes out to Dr. Hyeyoung Bang! Dr. Bang has an undergraduate degree in Elementary/Music Education from Busan National University of Education and her first master's degree in English Education from Pukyong National University, both in South Korea where she is originally from. Her second master's degree with honors is in Education/Educational Psychology from The University of New England (Armidale, Australia) and her PhD in Educational Psychology from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Bang's research interests included peace and wisdom studies which she used to pilot a topics class for the MACIE program this spring. Congratulations are also in order as Dr. Bang will be stepping into the role of MACIE Program Coordinator beginning August 2023!

This week, several of our faculty are attending the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) conference in Washington D.C. They met up with MACIE alumni, now Associate Professor, Luis Macias. So good to see the baton being passed to the next generation!

Sylvia Garchie is a first year MACIE student from Ghana, West Africa. Sylvia has a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. She has taught in various levels of education from University to primary school for the past four years before discovering the MACIE program. She is passionate about studying International Education and is excited to expand her knowledge of it. She believes that the MACIE program will help her improve the existing systems of Education in her country and equip her to stand out as well.

Wrapping up the semester with one more
Stormy Weiss is from Toledo, Ohio and earned her bachelor's degree in Tourism, Leisure, and Event Planning with a focus on Cultural and Educational Tourism from BGSU in 2018. She spent the following years working hospitality in Yellowstone National Park and Grand Canyon National Park, and now works as the Volunteer Coordinator at Habitat for Humanity of Wood County. Stormy joined MACIE because "I had an interest in the educational side of travel and would like to research further ways to incorporate the two."

Sunita Aryal Chhetri is a first year MACIE originally from Nepal. She has already earned a Master's Degree in Education Administration from Ohio University. While in Nepal, Sunita taught at both the elementary and high school levels, worked in HIV & AIDS prevention, and promoted child sponsorship & community development. Sunita is excited for her growth in the MACIE program as it opens doors for further cross-cultural and educational work.

Pemphero Msangaambe comes from Malawi, known as the "warm heart of Africa." Before joining the MACIE program, she obtained her bachelor’s degree of education from African Bible college in 2016. Soon after graduation she joined a non-profit organization, Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) as a volunteer for a project called Citizen Participation and Policy Engagement (CPPE) which taught people in the local communities about decentralization, as well as human rights and trafficking in a district bordering Malawi and Zambia. Later, Pemphero worked as a project officer for the same organization (EAM) in a project called “Fighting Violence against Women,” teaching communities how to protect women and girls from violence in a district bordering Malawi and Tanzania. Pemphero has passion for adult education, with her other interests being migration and child development.

Angela Fultz graduated from the MACIE program in 2020. She is currently an English teacher at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, IN. Angela is also a full time dog mom and is studying for the Foreign Service Officer Test.

Dr. Christy Galletta-Horner (better known as Dr. G) was born and raised in Pennsylvania. She and her husband lived in Pittsburgh for 10 years before moving to Ohio. Dr. G has a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology, as well as both a Master's of Science and a Ph.D. (with a Quantitative Research Methods minor) in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. G joined the MACIE team as an associate professor directly after completing her doctoral degree in 2017. Her research focuses on the role of emotional culture in the promotion of healthy individuals and social functioning. Dr. G sees her position as a perfect fit as she is able to pursue her own research interests, teach research methods courses, and support her students as they embark on their own scholarly research endeavors.

Kevin Crane is from Columbus, Ohio and is in his final year as a MACIE student focusing on earning his Administration of Higher Education Certificate as well. He has a BA in Communication and is a graduate of Semester at Sea. Kevin has spent nearly three years living in South East and Southeast Asia where he served as an English Teacher in Myanmar as part of the Peace Corps and an English Teacher in South Korea at an after school program. Having worked as a student orientation leader, resident assistant, and activities coordinator, Kevin has a wide depth of experience working on a university campus. He now works as the Graduate Assistant for the Global Village Learning Community where he leads his class of half international and half American students; offering a welcoming space for students passionate about cross-cultural learning. Since coming to BGSU, Kevin has been a group leader for the Cross Cultural Conversation Connection (CCCC) once a week throughout the school year and loves meeting new people.

Dr. Margaret Booth has served in a variety of roles at BGSU for 26 years, from a professor and researcher, to the Dean of the Graduate College, and most importantly as the founder of the MACIE program. She is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and has plans to retire there. Dr. Booth has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Secondary Education from Miami University, and a Master of Arts degree in International Studies, followed by a PhD in Education, both from Ohio University. Before coming to BGSU, Dr. Booth taught middle and high school English in Cincinnati, Kenya, and Cleveland, and has conducted research in Eswatini (then called Swaziland), Manchester, England, Cleveland, and most recently Fremont, Ohio. She is a Returned Peace Corp Volunteer who served in Kenya at the start of her career. It was during her time in Africa that Dr. Booth became involved with longitudinal research, specifically with a focus in investigating the interactive effects of one’s cultural context on human development.
