Dr. Sanz Casasnovas is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Spanish at BGSU, whose work focuses on the grotesque, embodiment, and Caribbean and Spanish literary traditions. Dr. Porbén is an Associate Professor of World Languages and Cultures specializing in contemporary Latin American and Caribbean literature, film, and popular culture.

In this episode of the BG Ideas Podcast, hosted by Halima L*l Ali, ICS Graduate Research Assistant, we sit down with Dr. Erik Garabaya Casado, Teaching Professor of Spanish in BGSU’s Department of World Languages and Cultures, to explore the evolving relationship between generative AI and language education.

Dr. Garabaya discusses how generative AI can help develop critical language awareness, his perspective on translanguaging, and how educators can navigate conversations about dialects and the ways they are stigmatized by both English and Spanish speakers and by Large Language Models.

He also shares surprising student responses to AI in language classes and considers what the future of college-level language learning might look like as generative AI continues to grow.
