Are you a string student looking for a challenging and fun atmosphere where you can improve on your skills while meeting other string students? As a violin, viola, cello or bass player, you will receive individual guidance from members of the esteemed string faculty at BGSU. SMI String faculty spotlight: Caroline Eva Chin, violin
Described by Time Out New York as “Incisive, industrious, and creatively restless…” Caroline Eva Chin gave her solo debut at age 12 and has concertized throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia where her performances have taken her to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Kennedy Center, and the White House. An avid chamber musician, Chin has performed at numerous music festivals including the Scotia Music Festival in Canada, 2 Rivers Festival in the UK, Consonances Festival in France, and the Schiermonnikoog Chamber Music Festival in Holland. Recordings include the world premiere of Elliott Carter’s Tre Duetti for Violin and Cello on Centaur Records as well as recordings on Avie Records, Somm Records, and New World Records. She has given performances and master classes at universities and colleges throughout the U.S. including Oberlin Conservatory, University of North Texas, Shenandoah College, and Michigan State University and Ohio State University. Chin completed her studies at The Juilliard School, Indiana University, and the Graduate Center of CUNY.

SMI Strings Faculty spotlight: Brian Snow, cello
Cellist Brian Snow has earned a reputation as a gifted and versatile performer in chamber music, orchestral, and solo settings. Praised by the Boston Globe for his “…pugnacious, eloquent, self-assurance…”, he spent a decade pursuing a varied performing and teaching career in the New York City area. In addition to being a member of the NYC-based ensembles Newspeak, OMNI Ensemble, and Trio Chimera, Dr. Snow has performed and recorded with a variety of artists, including Meredith Monk, The National, Max Richter, My Brightest Diamond, Ratatat, Björk, and the Emerson String Quartet. He has appeared on recordings on Centaur, New Amsterdam, Innova, Deutche Gramophon, Cantaloupe, and Naxos labels and has performed at many well-known venues in New York and around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Bargemusic, Issue Project Room, 92nd St. Y, Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan. As principal cellist of New York Symphonic Ensemble, Dr. Snow has performed in halls throughout Japan on that ensemble's annual tours and has appeared as soloist at halls in Fukuoka and Sendai. Other concerto appearances include Riverside Orchestra in New York, Longy Chamber Orchestra in Boston as winner of the Longy Concerto Soloists Competition, Crescent City Symphony in New Orleans, and the Hartt Symphony.
Dr. Snow received a Doctorate in Music from Stony Brook University, a MM from Yale, and also holds degrees from Hartt and Longy Schools of Music. His primary mentors have included Terry King, Aldo Parisot, David Finckel, and Colin Carr.

SMI Strings Faculty spotlight: Robert Rohwer, Double Bass
Joined the BGSU faculty in fall 2007; holds bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College, where his primary teachers included Timothy Pitts and Scott Haigh; received his master’s degree in bass performance from Rice University under the guidance of Timothy Pitts and Paul Elison; as a Fellow of The Tanglewood Institute of Music, attended for two consecutive years studying privately and performing in master classes with esteemed bassist Edwin Barker; past instructors include Ethan Connor, Harold Robinson and Dave Malone; performed nationally with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Cleveland Ballet, Cleveland Opera, Ohio Chamber Orchestra, Toledo Symphony and Fort Wayne Philharmonic; internationally with the Bergen Philharmonic (Norway) and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in addition to performances in Japan, Switzerland, the former Soviet Union, Germany, France and Italy; toured with the Amabile String Quartet and performed as solo bass in numerous chamber ensembles; currently a member of the Ann Arbor, Flint and Saginaw symphonies.

HS String Students: Following the traditions of the Grammy-Award winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, we are looking for motivated violinists, violists, cellists, and double bassists to join the BGSU conductor-less ensemble, Volante. Motivated students under age 14 are welcome to apply with a letter of recommendation from their instrumental teacher.
