We have 18 permanent faculty who research and teach across four major areas: demography, family, social psychology, and criminology. Besides M.A. and Ph.D.
Our Department of Sociology consists of undergraduate and graduate programs which prepare students for competitive fields across scientific, policy, and social service disciplines. degrees, we offer an M.A. in Applied Demography and Ph.D. minor in quantitative methods. We have about 50 graduate students and 100 undergraduate majors.

Over the past weekend, BGSU held Spring 2026 Commencement ceremonies. Chris Julian, who completed his PhD in summer 2025, came back and was hooded by Susan Brown, his advisor (first picture). Gary Oates and Steve Demuth represented the Sociology Faculty participating in the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony for the College of Arts and Sciences (second picture). Not pictured was also Fatemah Hassanzadeh who earned her MA degree π

Congratulations to our very own Dr. Laura Sanchez, whose research was recently featured in the Plaid Horse, a premier U.S. equestrian magazine. Her research brings to light the role of horse riding in enhancing youth emotional development and well-being. Awesome job, Laura! π
