An exceptional program tonight! Okoye is a living composer and her piece "Voices Shouting Out" premiered in 2002. The pairing of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's "Symphonic Variant ions on an African Air" with spoken word (consisting largely of quotations by George Washington) provided by Aaron Dworkin is a multilayered exploration of American history. Dawson said of his "Negro Folk Symphony" that "the finest compliment that could be paid my symphony...is that it unmistakeably is not the work of a white man."
