Chinese Flagship at WKU

Chinese Flagship at WKU Our students strive to reach superior professional proficiency by the end of their undergraduate career & to have some fun along the way.

Join us at WKU Chinese Flagship & Modern Languages 🌎 WKU’s federally funded Chinese Flagship Pilot Program is actively redefining the paradigm in language education. Through dynamic integration of Chinese language instruction in every stage of the undergraduate educational path, this program is designed to bring talented students who start with no knowledge of Chinese up to Superior levels of prof

iciency by the time they graduate from college. The Flagship program takes a fresh approach in language education by infusing study in the Honors College with Chinese language learning opportunities, incorporating a series of mandatory study abroad experiences and internships throughout students’ collegiate careers, and transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries that separated language education from learning within the major. The WKU Chinese Flagship, one of eleven Chinese programs funded by the National Security Education Program (http://www.thelanguageflagship.org), will offer students from Kentucky and throughout the U.S. an affordable, high-quality undergraduate education that combines the study of Mandarin Chinese with rigorous academics in an engaged Honors community setting.

From curious first-year student to Boren Scholar! 🇹🇼✨

When Samantha Gerdes first visited WKU, she never imagined that one conversation would lead her to study Mandarin, create content in Chinese, study abroad, and earn the prestigious Boren Award. 🏆❣️

This fall, Samantha will spend 10 months in Taiwan 🤩 With the support of WKU's Chinese Flagship faculty, study abroad experiences, and countless hours of hard work, Samantha transformed uncertainty into opportunity. 🙌

Her advice for future students? 💬 "Just try it. You don't know how good you'll be until you put in the effort."

Congratulations, Samantha! We can't wait to see all you'll accomplish in Taiwan. 🌏❤️

Seven students in the Chinese Flagship Program at WKU have been awarded $25,000 David L. Boren Scholarships to fund intensive language study in Taiwan during the 2026-2027 academic year.

The Boren Scholarship will fund the recipients’ Capstone Year in Taiwan, the culminating experience of WKU’s intensive Chinese Flagship Program.

The Chinese Flagship Program is intended to advance students to a level of fluency required to operate in a professional environment--often from zero experience at the beginning of their undergraduate career.

In the Capstone Year, Flagship students spend the first semester enrolled directly in courses at a host university and the second semester in a professional internship related to their academic and career goals.
