Visit use at BOWLINGGREENJUDO.COM Kodokan Judo was founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano at the Eishoji Temple near Tokyo, Japan . The practice of Judo found a home in physical education and sport. Sport Judo provided teamwork, which was good for all and also developed the individual. Judo was a complete physical education; not just a game. Although self-defense techniques were included in the traini

ng, emphasis was on using the techniques in a holistic manner. Dr. Jigoro Kano is credited with jujitsu's survival of the Meiji Restoration at a time jujitsu was looked down upon in Japan. He took jujitsu and adapted it to the times. His new methodology was called Judo. He combined sport and philosophy into a way of life that contributes to society. In 1882, Dr. Jigoro Kano (The Father of Judo) made a comprehensive study of several ancient self defense forms and integrated the best of these forms into a sport, which is known as Kodokan Judo. The fundamental physical techniques at the heart of Judo are using the opponent’s body weight against him: in this way, a small fighter can beat a much larger, stronger opponent with the proper strategy, skill and technique. Judo is practiced on mats, and there is no kicking or punching. The key techniques in Judo are throws and grappling, including choke holds, joint locks and arm bars. Judo has a system of belt color ranks, which are designed to recognize a person's degree of competence, knowledge, and leadership in the sport. Judo developed as a sport and was first included in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Judo has been a part of the Olympic Games ever since. Judo is an excellent form of all around exercises that develops strength in body and mind, self-confidence, respect of others, and the importance of trust. Through practice students learn discipline and self-control and are provided with a meaningful way to channel their energies. Judo also teaches relatively easy techniques to master that have real self-defense applications. The students will learn the skills of falling, grappling, throwing, and tournament play. Our program is an excellent way to increase your flexibility, endurance, power and strength, with the added benefits of developing self-confidence, courage, and leadership. The major goal of our program is to provide a positive atmosphere where our students can develop as both recreational and competitive athletes. The ultimate goal in Judo is to develop oneself to the maximum extent possible, always striving for perfection, so that you can contribute something of value to the world. The Bowling Green Kentucky Judo Club competition team won the overall team competition at the 2017, 2013, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, and 2000 O. Helvey Kentucky State Judo Championships bringing the total to 12 state championships that Bowling Green Judo has won the overall team competition. Great information to share with anyone interested in the sport of Judo!

Why learn judo? Training positives are:

Physical – You can train to respond to any threat while getting a good aerobic workout. You tone up muscles and learn to defend yourself, while improving speed, flexibility, power, agility, balance, and reflexes.

Mental – Learn how to control yourself in any situation. Judo will give you self-confidence in all areas. Judo encourages competitive spirit and a feeling of confidence. For those not interested in competing, judo is a great recreational or defense activity.

Safety – Judo training includes how to fall without injury, a skill unique to judo and useful in everyday life. Our club is committed to taking every precaution to keeping students as safe as possible. Our experienced instructors use warm-up regimens to help eliminate pulls and strains.

Our practical, traditional self-defense techniques, avoidance strategies, and methods of controlling others through holds and joint locks.

Judo is many things to different people: an art, sport, discipline, recreational or social activity, keep-fit program, means of self-defense, and way of life. It is to some extent all these, but to most participants it’s a sport.

Introduced into the Olympics in 1964, judo is played by millions throughout the world. People play to excel in competition, stay in shape, and develop self-confidence. Most people play judo for the fun of it.

As in all sports judo has a strict set of rules governing competitive play and ensuring safety. Judo offers those desiring to test their skills the opportunity to compete at levels ranging from club to Olympic competition. Weight and gender divisions are used in competition, and age groupings for juniors and masters.

Judo emphasizes throws as well as pins but is best known for its spectacular throwing techniques. Judoists wear special clothes to help with the application of throws and other skills, clothing that enhances control for safety in practice and competition. Judo is played on special mats for comfort and safety.

Unlike other martial arts, there’s no kicking or punching in judo. You don’t need protective gear or boxing gloves to play judo. Judo emphasizes sport, fun, safety, and full physical activity for top conditioning. We teach and practice appropriate exercises and falling techniques before each workout. Judo's safety record is enviable when compared to other vigorous/contact sports. Instructors with nationally registered ranks teach classes.

If you like sports involving physical activity, you’ll probably love judo, an inexpensive, year-round activity that appeals to people from all walks of life. Judo provides the means for learning and improving oneself physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

Regular judo training can improve an individual's aerobic capacity, speed, power, strength, agility, and flexibility. As a sport that has evolved from a fighting art, it develops complete body control, fine balance, and fast reflexive action. Above all, it develops a sharp reacting mind well coordinated with the same kind of body. Judo utilizes virtually every muscle of the body and is an excellent overall conditioner.

Judo developed from fighting systems of feudal Japan, principally jujitsu, the art of self-defense. Judo training gives a person an effective self-defense system if the need arises, providing a decisive advantage over the untrained individual. Instruction stresses both sport and defensive aspects of judo.

Observe a few classes and then decide if you'd like to learn this exciting Olympic sport. If yes, join the USJA right away so you can get on the mat and begin working toward your first promotion and competing in a tournament. Because judo is an individual activity, everyone makes the team; nobody warms the bench.

Tournaments, Camps, and Seminars: Membership with current insurance in a national judo organization is required for all tournaments, clinics, and camps.

United States Judo Association: The USJA is a national judo organization that offers summer camps, clinics, and seminars. Clinics may be general or specific in nature, e.g., to certify instructors or review technical skills.

Hello Bowling Green Kentucky Judo Club and Friends,

There will be No Judo Classes on Monday - September 7, 2026 in Observance of Labor Day. The Moxley Parks and Rec Facility will be closed. I hope everyone enjoys this Holiday with family and friends. Take time to appreciate this yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Our club has been offering Judo classes to the community since 1984 starting at the YMCA(former Racketball Club) we had in town at that time. As a not for profit we have always used donated space. It was June 2022 that we moved from the Hillvue Church basement location and started our classes at the current F. O. Moxley fitness facility location. This is an outstanding facility in that it provides a knowledgeable staff, well maintained and clean fitness rooms and a family friendly environment. I am a member of the facility and want you to know that membership is very affordable and some of our Judo parents are facility members and use it to exercise when thier child is in our class.

As always, a very special THANK YOU to our Judo parents, Judo instructors(past and present) and Judo students who contribute, support and provide the encouragement we need to be a successful team. We are blessed in so many ways to be a part of a truly special Judo family. Senior Class photo from last evening attached. Junior Class photos will be taken Thursday.

My congratulations to Coach William Sofield on his Black belt First Degree promotion and Sensei Troy Bartlett, Black Belt Second Degree. We have an outstanding group of Brown and Black Belt instructors who work and study intently to earn thier rank just as all of our students do. They share thier years of knowledge and experience with students to help all of us improve our knowledge and teaching skills. Sensei Fred Barnett is moving back home to Bowling Green and has been officially added to our group of club coaches. He will be in class Thursday. He has many years of Judo experience as a competitor and coach. He will truly be an asset to our club instructor team and students going forward as the southern Indiana tournament quickly approaches.

Best wishes and see you Thursday,

Clint Brizendine
