One of the things that makes our Criminal Justice Learning Community so special is the intentional integration of hands-on, experiential learning opportunities!

Within their first month of classes, our first-year students enrolled in the CJLC sections of Introduction to Criminal Justice had the opportunity to visit the Lorain Police Department. Students participated in drone demonstrations, practiced accident reconstruction skills, and experienced other hands-on activities used in the field of law enforcement.

Last week, some of our students had the incredible opportunity to travel to Chicago to present their research at the Midwestern Criminal Justice Association Conference!

While in Chicago, our students not only shared their research but also had the opportunity to attend presentations from criminal justice professionals, connect with researchers and students from across the region, and explore the city.

A special congratulations to Miranda Bille, Lillian Haines, Piper Vice, and Carson Wright for winning the undergraduate student poster competition and to Kendra Mueller for winning the masters level poster competition! We are so proud of all of our students for representing BGSU Criminal Justice and showcasing their hard work and research!

Over the past two days, our second- and third-year Criminal Justice Learning Community students had the opportunity to travel to Lorain for an overnight experiential learning trip! 🚔

On Tuesday, students put their skills to the test as they practiced the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy course in real police cruisers, giving them a chance to experience training in a hands-on, real-world setting. After a busy day of learning, students enjoyed a group dinner and had the opportunity to explore the city before getting some rest for another day of training.

Students then spent Wednesday morning practicing defensive tactics training, allowing them to build practical skills while learning from professionals in the field.

We love providing our students with opportunities to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in real-world environments. Experiences like these allow our students to learn, grow, build connections, and gain a better understanding of the many opportunities available to them in the criminal justice field.

Today, we had the privilege of hearing from an incredible panel of criminal justice and legal professionals as we celebrated the 60th anniversary of Miranda v. Arizona!

Thank you to Judge Matthew Reger of the Wood County Court of Common Pleas, Chief Adam Moore of Delaware City Police Department, Dr. Boston, BGSU Political Science Professor, and Maggie Koch, Deputy Chief Prosecutor for the Criminal Division in Lucas County, for sharing your knowledge and perspectives with our students.

What a great way to kick off Constitution Week and reflect on the lasting impact of Miranda v. Arizona on the criminal justice system!

This summer, more than 70 of our students gained valuable hands-on experience through internships across the criminal justice field. From law enforcement and corrections to courts, advocacy, and beyond, our students put their knowledge into action and gained experiences that will help shape their future careers.
