Bright, cheerful classrooms 👩‍🏫 do more than look inviting — they help create an environment where students feel comfortable, motivated and ready to learn.

Academic classrooms on the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center campus create an encouraging space where students can grow and succeed.

The dedication shown by ESJCC instructors in creating these environments makes a meaningful difference. "I think thoughtful touches can go a long way in making a classroom welcoming and inspiring," said Missy Green, Core Instructor. "When students enjoy the space, they're often more engaged, confident and excited to participate."

By putting extra care and creativity into their classrooms, instructors help ensure that every student walks into a space that communicates an important message: you belong here, your education matters, you're valued. 💛

Earlier this month, Oneonta Job Corps Academy had the pleasure of hosting the Waverly Central School District on our campus!
Collaborating with area school districts is key 🔑 when it comes to creating resources and opportunities for young adults. It’s clear that the Waverly administration is exploring every avenue to help their students succeed after graduation.

Traditional college isn’t the preferred path for everyone. Many young people are ready to enter the workforce but still need time, training, and hands-on experience to build the skills needed for successful careers.

That’s where Job Corps can make a difference. We are providing another pathway, more choices, and new opportunities for youth to build a brighter 💡 future.

Kudos to Waverly for making the trip, learning more about Oneonta Job Corps, and keeping their students’ futures at the forefront. We’re proud to be part of the conversation! 👏

What an incredible achievement for Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center!🎉

From ranking 90th in the nation in 2023/2024 in student test scores to reaching No. 1 in literacy and No. 2 in math in 2026 — this is a remarkable transformation and reflects what happens when people come together with a shared commitment to student success.

According to Antowin Edwards, Academics 🍎 Manager, one of the keys to this success was getting students assigned to the right academic level to match their education and individual needs. "When students are placed where they can learn, grow and succeed, the results can be extraordinary."

Another important lesson behind these numbers: We need the right people in the right places.

Success isn't just about academics. "It's about the people who show up every day, support our students, support one another and believe in what we're doing," said Mr. Edwards. "We operate like a family. We care about each other." 💛

Amazing things can be achieved by putting people in the right places, meeting students where they are and caring about each other.

Congratulations to ESJCC Academics staff and students on this incredible accomplishment! 👏

Growing up in the Bronx, Tan’ia remembers wishing she could spend more time outdoors. After high school, she joined a conservation program in Oregon, where she spent 10 weeks camping and working on a six-person chainsaw crew doing tree thinning and restoration work. “It was eye-opening and helped me realize the kind of environment I wanted to be in,” she said.

That experience, along with a job as a camp counselor in Wisconsin, led her to change career paths at Northlands Job Corps. After completing Office Administration, she enrolled in Urban Forestry. “It kind of felt like home,” the 22-year-old said. “It felt like something that I was meant to do.”

Tan’ia especially enjoys climbing trees 🌲 and working outdoors. Her conservation experience also sparked an interest in wildland firefighting. Through Northlands’ partnership with the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests of the USDA Forest Service, she trained with a wildland firefighting 🧯crew and earned her Red Card.

“I just like doing hard things,” she said. “I like things that are challenging. Doing difficult work makes me feel stronger. 💪 It makes me feel more capable.” Her advice to other young adults, especially women considering nontraditional careers, is simple: “Try everything once if you can. Do it even if you’re scared.”

Elijah, age 19, grew up near Augusta, Maine, and has been training in Urban Forestry 🌲🌲at Northlands Job Corps for about eight months. Although he originally planned to take Welding, he discovered he enjoyed forestry even more after shadowing the trade. He volunteered for the Wildland Firefighting 🧯program because he wanted to challenge himself and gain experience doing work that is "bigger than you." Encouraged in part by two older brothers who worked as wildland firefighters, he said the prescribed burn exercise m confirmed his interest. "I really want to do this," he said. His advice: "You're going to have to have a lot of trust."

“When you’re up in a tree, 🌳 you’re seeing things from a place most people never get to see. You get past the fear and start thinking, ‘Wow, look at this view! I just did all that work, and I get to see this.”

Ethan, age 21, is training in Urban Forestry 🌲🌲 at Northlands Job Corps after discovering a career that combines his love of nature and working outdoors. Inspired by family members who served as firefighters 🧯 and years of church mission trips building homes 🏠 throughout Central and South America, he volunteered for the Wildland Firefighting program to help others while taking on new challenges. "It's just more about helping people," he said. Ethan also looks forward to traveling to places like Colorado and Washington while working on fire crews. His career goal is to become an arborist."
