Last night, Bowling Green Elementary School and Frankford Elementary School hosted our 5th Annual Culture Fair, and what an incredible evening it was!

We had the honor of welcoming beautiful Indian dance performances by Soorya Performing Arts, who brought vibrant culture and tradition to life right in our auditorium in the afternoon and evening performance.

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students showcased their learning by teaching us about 15 different countries and cultures. Throughout the year, students researched, prepared, and became experts on their assigned country.

One of the best (and tastiest!) parts of the evening?
The incredible food and drinks representing countries from around the globe.

Students, parents, and community members sampled flavors from different cultures while learning about traditions, geography, language, and history.

This event has truly become one of our favorite nights of the year.
But an evening like this doesn’t just happen... it takes an entire community.

A very special thank you to:
-Our amazing teachers who do a ton of work to make this night possible, especially our library teacher, Mrs. LeBeau, who helps her students research and prepare throughout the entire year
-Our parents for allowing your children to participate and for preparing food and drinks
-Our custodians for setting up tables, chairs, and transforming the space
-Our tech department for handling audio and performance needs
-Our middle school administration and PE teachers for allowing us to use the gym
-The Soorya performers for sharing their talents
-Our elementary administrators and office staff
-And every single person who worked behind the scenes to make this event possible

Living in a small, rural community, it is so important that our students experience the world beyond what they see every day. When we expose our children to different cultures, traditions, and perspectives, we build empathy. We grow understanding. We help them realize that we are far more alike than we are different.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a meaningful and memorable night.

These two little BGR-1 students helped fill up all the campus food pantries today with the items that the HS clubs and organizations collected in December. Please spread the word if you know of any families who could benefit from this wonderful community resource. We are so grateful for the nice pantries that the Reindeer Roundup group provided for us.

Also, this week is Kindness Week! Each day we will have a daily challenge.

Here is the weekend challenge for all staff and students: reach out to someone who you think may be feeling lonely to give them something to smile about. You can give them a call, send them a text, or even write a sweet note or card to send in the mail.

Remember, in a world where you can be anything, be kind!! ❤️🖤

This year's theme for School Counseling Week is "School Counselors Amplify Student Success." How do school counselors make this happen? By utilizing a fully comprehensive school counseling program!

A fully comprehensive school counseling program is comprised of four key components: Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and Student Support.

Working with all of our students district-wide from Kindergarten through 12th grade, our BGR-1 counseling program ensures students have the supports they need to be successful. Some of the priorities for BG counselors include teaching students about healthy relationship and coping skills, helping them identify ways to stay safe both inside and out of school, assisting them in navigating course choices in MS and HS, setting up students for success in life after high school, and helping in times of personal difficulty or crisis.

Although once referred to as 'guidance counselor,' due to counselors mainly helping students decide what path to choose after Graduation, the American School Counselor Association removed the word 'guidance' from our title and changed it to 'school counselor' in 1990 due to the numerous responsibilities that counselors in schools manage and implement.

It doesn't seem possible, but 8th graders and 10th graders have already started thinking about course schedules for next school year. Juniors and freshmen will be talking about classes with their counselors starting next week. All students who will be in grades 9-12 will have a Course Selection Sheet for parents to review and sign off on.

Every year, BGE and FE hold a cultural fair where our students research and present on specific countries. They learn a little about their history, customs, food, activities, and more. Our goal is to help our students learn more about the world and show them that, although we all may look or act differently, there may actually be more we have in common than we realize. We hope to promote cultural awareness, help students understand and respect different traditions and customs, foster inclusivity by celebrating diversity, and prepare students to navigate an increasingly interconnected world by building empathy and breaking down stereotypes.

One thing that our students love most is meeting in person or video chatting with someone who actually resides/resided in the country they are researching. This year, the countries we are focusing on are:

Marshall Islands
Côte d'ivoire
Taiwan
Belgium
Pakistan
Costa Rica
Georgia
Chad
Columbia
Dominican Republic
Morocco
Iraq
Philippines

If you know someone who lives or has lived in any of these countries and would be willing to connect us, please let me know! It would be a short (less than 30 min) video chat where our students ask questions prepared in advance (for example: What is school like there for students? What kind of food do you eat? What activities do children enjoy? etc.)

We would also love for you to attend the Cultural Fair the evening of February 25, 2026! It's always a huge success!

Warming centers provide a heated place for people to go during extremely cold weather. The Department of Health & Senior Services maintains an interactive map of warming centers/shelters to be used by the public. If you are aware of additions or deletions to the list of warming centers in your county, please send those changes to Marcia Davis at [email protected] as soon as possible. We want to include information on all sites designated as warming centers. Information needed is name of facility, street address, city, phone number, and hours of operation as well as whether the facility is ADA compliant.
