What Are You Most Proud of After Five Years? Over five years of teaching Mandarin, some of the proudest moments have come from seeing students improve their Mandarin, develop a genuine love for Chinese culture, and grow along the way. This journey has also been about overcoming challenges and finding pride in the strength and perseverance it took to move forward.

Learned from Students and Colleagues
One of the most valuable lessons is mutual respect—understanding each other’s boundaries and learning to respect them. Whether between teachers and students or among colleagues, respecting boundaries helps us build trust, strengthen relationships, and create a more positive environment for everyone. Sometimes, teaching is also about learning from the people around us.

What is one of the biggest challenges of teaching in the United States? For international teachers, you cannot simply bring your previous teaching experience into an American classroom and expect it to work the same way. The classroom culture can be completely different. Here, respect does not come automatically with the title of “teacher.” You have to earn your students’ respect through trust, communication, and genuine connection.
