The Gerontology Program at BGSU offers 2 undergraduate degrees: gerontology & long-term care, a minor, and a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Gerontology (MSIG). Small Class Sizes,

The average class size for upper level Gerontology classes is under 35 students, which allows students and faculty to interact on a more personal level. Faculty can provide more individualized attention to students and work to ensure that students are receiving the appropriate information they need for their goals. Experiential Component

Students participate in volunteering, service learning, and a required practicum that provides an understanding of the needs of older adults and the services they require. There is a strong emphasis on helping older adults adapt to aging in positive ways, ever mindful of their uniqueness and their individual dignity. Two Tracks of Study

A good reminder for all to check the batteries on their smoke detctors or even install smoke detectors, especially those of us who are known to burn the popcorn in the microwave.

National Fire Prevention Week highlights simple habits that keep your home safer. Start with a quick smoke alarm check:
• Replace smoke alarms every 10 years
• Swap batteries at least once a year (or when you hear that warning chirp)
• Test alarms monthly to make sure they’re ready when you need them

October is Residents’ Rights Month — a time to honor long‑term care residents and reaffirm Ohio’s commitment to dignity, respect, and quality of life for all. This year’s theme, Join Us at the Table, celebrates the importance of food, mealtime, and community in residents’ daily lives.

Every day, Ohio’s Long-Term Care Ombudsmen visit facilities across the state to educate residents on their rights, empower them to speak up, and advocate for their health, safety, and well‑being.

Applications are now open for the 2027 Scholars in Aging Program!

Students enrolled at Ohio colleges and universities can gain hands on experience, build connections across the aging network, and earn a $2,500 stipend.

Eligible majors include nutrition, allied health, gerontology, social work, planning, and other fields that support the lives of older Ohioans.
