We bridge the gap between research and policy to transform justice and behavioral health systems.

With expertise in various fields, we tackle complex research questions and develop evidence-based solutions for criminal justice, youth justice, mental health, and substance use systems. Practitioners, agencies, and organizations often struggle to apply research to their practice. Our goal is to make data, research, and evaluation more practical and accessible.

📊 Is Research Practical? Yes.

Research has little value if it never leaves the page.

Every day, organizations and communities make decisions that affect people, programs, and systems. The challenge isn't just generating knowledge; it's turning that knowledge into action.

Data alone do not create change. Meaningful impact happens when evidence is accessible, actionable, and relevant to real-world challenges.

At KLK Research Group, we help bridge research, policy, and practice by turning data and findings into insights that support better decisions and stronger systems.

Because research isn't just about understanding problems; it's about helping communities solve them.

📘Justice Terms to Know: Incarceration vs. Confinement

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they don't always mean the same thing.

📘Incarceration generally refers to the deprivation of liberty through placement in a jail, prison, or other correctional facility.

📘Confinement is often used more broadly to describe placement in a secure setting where an individual's freedom of movement is restricted. Depending on the context, this may include jails, prisons, detention centers, or juvenile facilities.

Why does this matter?

When discussing justice systems, people often focus on prison populations. But a significant number of individuals are held in other forms of secure custody, including:

📊 Local jails
📊 Juvenile detention facilities
📊 Immigration detention facilities
📊 Other secure correctional settings

These facilities serve different purposes and represent different decision points within the justice system.

📌 Understanding the language helps us better understand where people are being held, why they are there, and how policy, resources, and reform efforts may affect different parts of the system.

Have you seen these terms used interchangeably in ways that affect how justice issues are understood?

Honoring the Fallen. Supporting Communities.

Today, we honor and remember the brave servicemembers who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day is a time to reflect on sacrifice, service, and the lasting impact these individuals have had on families, communities, and generations.

At KLK Research Group, we recognize the importance of strong communities, support systems, and meaningful service to others.

As we pause today, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and the families who continue to carry their legacy forward.

Wishing everyone a safe, meaningful, and reflective Memorial Day.

🌏 Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

This month, we recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, contributions, and resilience of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.

AAPI individuals and communities have helped shape education, healthcare, research, public service, behavioral health, and justice systems across generations.

At KLK Research Group, we believe stronger systems begin with a deeper understanding of:

📊 Diverse communities and lived experiences
📊 The intersection of research, data, and policy
📊 The importance of representation, inclusion, and voice

AAPI Heritage Month is also an opportunity to reflect on the value of culturally informed approaches in research, policy, and practice.

Effective systems grow through awareness, collaboration, and meaningful engagement with the communities they serve.

🧠 Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. A reminder that mental health is an important part of overall well-being for individuals, families, workplaces, schools, and communities.

Mental health challenges are common, yet many people still face stigma, barriers to care, or difficulty accessing consistent support. Awareness, understanding, and early support can make a meaningful difference.

At KLK Research Group, we focus on how research and data can help strengthen behavioral health, justice, and community systems through:

🧠 Evidence-based practices
🧠 Cross-system coordination
🧠 Prevention and early intervention
🧠 Research-to-policy translation

Mental health is not separate from community well-being; it is central to it.

This month, we recognize the professionals, advocates, researchers, providers, families, and individuals working every day to advance awareness, support, and access to care.

🧠 Mental Health Terms to Know: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

According to the DSM-5, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not for at least six months, about a range of everyday events or activities.

Common symptoms may include:
• Restlessness or feeling on edge
• Fatigue
• Difficulty concentrating
• Irritability
• Muscle tension
• Sleep disturbance

GAD can affect how individuals think, feel, and function in daily life, particularly when worry becomes difficult to control.

Like many mental health conditions, GAD is treatable, especially when individuals have access to evidence-based supports such as therapy, medication, and coordinated care.

⚖️ Acquitted in Court. Convicted in Public?

What happens when the justice system says not guilty, but the public says otherwise?

In criminal and juvenile justice systems, acquittal (or no delinquency finding) means the government did not meet its burden of proof.

Full stop.

But in practice, especially in high-profile cases, that’s often not where the story ends.

📱 Social media narratives take hold
📺 True crime reframes the facts
🎬 Documentaries shape lasting impressions
📰 Headlines outlive verdicts

Unlike a courtroom, these spaces aren’t bound by standards of evidence or due process.

So we’re left with a disconnect:
📌 Legal outcomes are final. Public judgments are not.

And that matters.

For individuals, an acquittal may not end stigma or reputational harm.

For systems, public narratives can shape trust in outcomes.

For society, we risk normalizing judgment without safeguards.

👉 Are we creating a system where being charged is enough to be judged regardless of the outcome?

The presumption of innocence is more than a legal standard. It’s a societal value.

💬 Where do you think the line should be between legal outcomes and public perception?

🔍 Classic Criminological Theories: Still Relevant Today?

When we think about crime and justice, it’s easy to focus on current trends and data.

But many of today’s discussions are rooted in classic criminological theories that still shape how we understand—and respond to—crime.

A few foundational perspectives:

📊 Routine Activities Theory – Crime occurs when a motivated offender, a suitable target, and a lack of guardianship come together.

📊 Social Disorganization Theory – Community factors like poverty and instability can influence crime patterns.

📊 Strain Theory – Barriers to achieving goals can create pressure that increases the likelihood of offending.

📊 Social Learning Theory – Behavior is learned through interactions and reinforcement from others.

These theories don’t explain everything—but they help us understand:
⚖️ Why crime concentrates in certain places
⚖️ How environments shape behavior
⚖️ Where prevention and intervention can be most effective

Many modern strategies—like situational prevention and community-based approaches—build on these ideas.

At KLK Research Group, we emphasize that strong policy and practice are grounded not only in data, but in theory.

Because theory helps us ask better questions—and design better solutions.

🟦 Child Abuse Prevention Month: Crossover Youth

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to focus on prevention, protection, and support.

Research has long identified crossover (dually involved) youth—those who have experienced abuse or neglect and become involved in the juvenile justice system.

This overlap is not incidental. Youth in the child welfare system are more likely to experience justice system contact, often shaped by trauma, unmet needs, and system fragmentation.

When systems operate in silos, youth may face:
🔹 Gaps in services
🔹 Conflicting case plans
🔹 Increased system involvement

👉 Are systems coordinated around youth—or are youth navigating systems that aren’t coordinated around them?

At KLK Research Group, we focus on research that supports more aligned, cross-system responses and better outcomes.

🔍 Second Chance Month: What Does a “Second Chance” Require?

April is Second Chance Month—a time to reflect on reentry and opportunity.

But meaningful second chances don’t happen by chance. They’re shaped by systems, policies, and practice.

Many individuals returning to the community face interconnected challenges:

⚖️ Housing
⚖️ Employment
⚖️ Behavioral health and substance use needs
⚖️ Continuity of care
⚖️ Barriers that limit opportunity

Research shows that successful reentry isn’t driven by a single program—but by coordinated, system-level approaches.

So we have to ask:

📊 How are we defining success?
📊 Are services aligned with real needs?
📊 How well are systems working together?

At KLK Research Group, we believe bridging research and policy is essential.

Because second chances require more than intention—they require coordination, strategy, and follow-through.
