BoCo Wild Writers week 12: Earth Day and Eagles at Stearns Lake / Carolyn Holmberg Preserve at Rock Creek Farm. We started out by going to the far end of the lake, talking about something we had done to help the planet, and then picking up trash on our way back. You never know what you’ll find, this time it was mostly empty containers of chicken livers (I guess for bait)! We had lunch, celebrated Winston’s birthday, read some of the Front Range Eagle Studies’s report on the Stearns Lake eagle pair, and read “Earth Day on the Bay” by Gary Soto, then headed out to get a better look at the eagles and do some writing. At the bridge we read “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” by Wallace Stevens and Heather Gardner’s “Six Ways of Looking at a Bridge” then each wrote a poem with the same number of ways of looking at something as we were years old (but they cut me a break!). We continued down the trail to the official eagle viewing area, got to see a parent bring in food, and saw one of the eaglets through my spotting scope. We wrote a bit from the eaglet’s perspective, then returned to the shelter to decorate our anthology covers. On the way, Birds of Prey Foundation released a pelican and a gull that they had been rehabilitating, which was pretty neat.
