In the past few months I've hosted virtual gatherings with leaders having one of the most important conversations I think we can be having right now.

AI. The future of work. What it means for the people we lead.

A lot of people are predicting doomsday. I get it. I have good friends who've lost jobs. I know students wondering if their major will be relevant once they graduate.

Call me Bible nut but I keep coming back to the ancient tribe of Issachar from 1 Chronicles. "𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨."Not panic. Not hype. Not hide.

They ask, "𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙞𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩?"

What I'm seeing in these conversations is something surprising.
The leaders who are leaning in aren't becoming more tech-focused.

They're becoming more human. More grounded. More clear on what only they can bring that no algorithm ever will.

That's the opportunity inside the crisis.

The average leader changes jobs 12 times over their career.

It doesn’t have to be 12. You can nail it sooner.

However…most people just have no idea how to find work that actually fits who they are.

When you do, the path leads somewhere worth going …fun, freedom, and fulfillment.

Does that resonate with where you are right now?

AI just claimed another white collar job. Probably someone you know.

And for some of you, this might actually be the push you’ve been waiting for.

In years of working with hundreds of leaders, many of them in transition, I’ve watched some of the most talented professionals I know stay stuck in careers that paid well but never really fit. They were good at the job. They just weren’t made for it.

If that’s you, here’s what I want you to consider.

Some roles AI can’t touch. Not because they’re too technical, but because they’re too human. They require presence. Wisdom. Trust. The kind of thing that only comes from lived experience.

My wife Mindy put it well: “𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚’𝙨 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.”

We’ve all drowned in data. But the human factor still carries exponential opportunity, and AI will never close that gap.

Here are 10 worth thinking about:

𝟏. 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: No algorithm can sit across from a struggling leader and read the room.

𝟐. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐫: Healing requires a human who can truly see another human.

𝟑. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: A soul in crisis needs a soul in the room, not a chatbot.

𝟒. 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭: Reading what’s unspoken between two wounded people takes human intuition.

𝟓. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫: The best teachers believe in you before you believe in yourself.

𝟔. 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫: People give their hearts to causes led by someone whose heart shows up too.

𝟕. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫: Trust builds face to face. AI can’t knock on a door.

𝟖. 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫, 𝐏𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫: Real scars and a real point of view cut through AI-generated noise.

𝟗. 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧-𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: People pay a premium for what a screen can’t give them.

𝟏𝟎. 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 : Helping families grow takes someone who’s done the hard work themselves.

These aren’t consolation prizes. They’re callings that millions of people need filled, and can’t get from a chatbot.

AI changes things. No question.

I once saw retirement as a way out. Out of work I didn’t like, not into work I loved.

Sad, right? But also kind of typical.

Then I watched leaders I admired coach into later life because coaching gave them 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞. Are they different?

Coaches really are today’s spiritual leaders! Are you in?

Of course you saw Alysa Liu skate last night.

But did you see her face?

The smile.
The bright eyes.
The pure joy.
The peace.

That look challenged me.

Someone posted, “Can she bottle that joy? I’d drink it daily.” Another wrote, “Mental health goal: Alysa Liu calm.”

She once stepped away at sixteen. When she returned, it was not for medals or applause.

She came back for love.

And you could feel it.

Love beats fear. Every time.
Stronger than pressure. Stronger than proving. Stronger than performing.

The best seasons of my life grew from love. The worst came from striving.

So here is the question I am asking myself today. Maybe it is for you too.

What would change if you fell back in love with what you are doing right now?

Of course you saw her flawless figure skating last night if you watched Alysa Liu …but did you see the look on her face? Her smile, her bright eyes, her outrageous joy? Her peace?

Personally, not only was I captivated, but I was also challenged by something I’ve done wrong in seasons that I now see as wasted and even selfish.

Doing it for LOVE.

One person on X wrote, “Can Alysa Liu sell that joy in a bottle? I’ll buy and drink it every day…. “Therapist: what’s your mental health goal?” another posted. “me: Alysa Liu calm.”

Alysa once stepped away from skating at sixteen. When she came back it wasn’t to prove anything. Not for a medal. Not for applause. Not for likes, follows or shares.

She returned because she LOVED it. She LOVED the sport. You could see it in her body, her smile, her eyes.

Love is stronger than fear. Always. Stronger than medals, money or accolades.

Especially when you’re doing hard things…

Like you are now.

When love drives you, you go all in. You love the challenge. You love the moment. You love the chance to show up fully alive. Outcomes lose their power because your joy already won.

Looking back on my own life the seasons that flourished were the ones fueled by love, not pressure, not proving and definitely not performing.

The others…not proud of them.

So here’s the question I’m asking myself this morning and maybe it’s for even one other FB friend. You?

“That pill” says my friend author Richard Leider “It’s called purpose...It’s having something you’re excited to get up and do!”

Forty years ago, Leider was shocked to learn that many people who retired died within just a few years. Most retirees were neither happy nor healthy, just the opposite!

To get to the bottom of this, Leider interviewed thousands of people who retired and found one thing they said over and over again.

“I wish I had found my purpose.” “I wish I had defined my purpose earlier in my life and in my leadership.”

The minority who were thriving had taken action to intentionally solve their equation to find their purpose. Their calling. Calling = Gifts + Passion + Values. “They’re using their gifts in something they’re passionate about and in things that fit their values,” said Leider.

Are you?

Neuroscience now backs up these findings. When you’re doing things that you’re curious about (passionate about) and fit a bigger purpose, you’re healthier and happier. You live longer and better! And it starts in your mind and emotional health... your hope!

“The two most important days in this life,” according to Leider, “are the day you’re born and the day you discover why you were born. You discover your purpose.”
