During Spring Break, 11 Leeds Scholars traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to help rebuild homes in the Lower Ninth Ward, the hardest hit area from Hurricane Katrina. The scholars worked with the Lower Nine Organization in assisting in 4 separate house projects in various tasks such as roofing, siding, painting, and a variety of other tasks. In addition to rebuilding homes, the scholars toured the Lower Ninth Ward, learned about the effects of the storm, and created a video discussing where New Orleans is now and what the scholars did to try and improve the situation as a whole!

Hey everyone!

Meet Brooke Fox (Junior)

This Sunday, Brooke is hosting the FIRE Undergraduate Women's Leadership Conference from 1-4pm. It will be an incredible chance to hear from a number of Keynote speakers. In the meantime, let's hear what Brooke has to say about empowerment...

"How to effectively empower yourself and others around you!

1. Adopt an irrational belief in your own success. Never approach a challenge thinking you may fail.

2. Stop self-limiting. Go for the biggest and best that you can dream up.

3. Imagine yourself in ten years. What would the future you tell you about your life?

4. Ask for things you normally wouldn't, from people you would normally wouldn't talk to.

5. Don't do things that don't align with your heart. Seriously. And if you don't know where your passions are, figure it out before you do anything else.

6. Don't be afraid to break the rules ;) "

See what current Leeds Scholars are up to:

Everett Randle (Finance, '17), Iana Stoytcheva (Finance & Accounting, '16), and Rick Brubaker (Finance & Accounting - '16) were chosen by faculty to represent CU in The Economist's Undergraduate Case Competition Sponsored by Kerrisdale Capital. This gave the three students an amazing opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom in a real life setting.

The competition was titled: "Find a Zero: Which Billion Dollar Company Will be Bankrupt by 2020". The team from Leeds constructed a short thesis on Outerwall, more popularly known as the company who owns Redbox.

Check out their detailed report and presentation and don't forget to vote for CU Boulder to show your support! Go Buffs!

For this week's '5 Tips With Students', we chatted with Jim Dalton on How to Kill The Interview for Your Dream Job/Internship. Let's hear what Jim has to say:

"1. Be Genuine. Never deviate from your true interests. Whenever you are in an interview you want to make sure that the company is doing things that truly interest you, and that the company fosters people that interest you. Never lie about your abilities, interests or career aspirations. If you like to ski, hang out with friends, and want to start your own company in 5 years, don't be afraid to say it in any capacity.

2. . Be Confident. Never think about who you are interviewing against. Even if they have an Ivy league degree, a MBA, or a 4.0 GPA. If you are unique, capable, and able to voice your individuality, they have no leg up on you. There's a reason they are interviewing you too.

3. Be Calm. When you are walking into an interview, remember that: you are out of time to prepare, and no one will be ready for every question they will ask. The more you clear your head and relax, the more you will be able to think decisively when you are put on the spot. Also, having a good grasp on your resume and background will allow you to "break the ice" early in the interview, as interviewers almost always start with questions on your resume.

4. Be Interested. Follow the company and the market that it operates in. Look at recent acquisitions, deals, or projects related to the company and ask questions about each of them. Also, learn as much as possible about what your role at the company would be before going in. The more you know before, the more confident you'll be and you will know if it really is your dream job.

5. Be Picky... but not TOO picky. Remember, it is your first job or internship... It likely won't be exactly what you want to do in ten years. Look for aspects of the role that will set you up for your dream job or look for a company culture that you envision within your dream job."
