The Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research (CCAR) is dedicated to the study of astrodynamics and the application of satellites to science, navigation, and remote sensing of the Earth and planets. Hosted by the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, CCAR was established in 1985 as a key component of the University of Colorado at Boulder’s emphasis on space science. CCAR brings together a multidisciplinary group of faculty, staff, and students to enhance our understanding of the Earth and the solar system through satellite missions and observations. Research emphasis areas include astrodynamics, which involves orbital and attitude motion of Earth satellites, interplanetary spacecraft, and planetary bodies; global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) used for orbit determination, remote sensing, and vehicle navigation, and remote sensing of the Earth’s surface, gravity field, oceans, atmosphere and space.

In 2025, the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research (CCAR) will proudly celebrate its 40th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, the Center will host a special anniversary event on Friday, October 24th, 2025, bringing together alumni, current students, faculty, and friends of CCAR to honor four decades of innovation, education, and impact in the field of aerospace and look to the future.

The event will highlight the achievements of CCAR alumni, showcasing their diverse career paths and contributions to the aerospace industry. The program will include the annual George Born Lecture delivered by Shyam Bhaskaran of JPL, as well as panel discussions featuring alumni.

This celebration aims to recognize the Center’s lasting influence on the field of astrodynamics and to honor the legacy of its graduates. It will also serve as a unique opportunity for alumni to reconnect with one another, engage with current students and faculty, and strengthen their ties with the CCAR and the Smead Aerospace Engineering Department.

A formal invitation with program will be sent out in late July.
