Black Ice makes use of time-lapse photography and field techniques to characterize the changing states of Himalayan debris-covered glaciers.
As climate continues to change, it is important, now more than ever, to quantify what is happening to the glaciers of the Himalaya. We are proponents of "boots on the ground" research approaches in Nepal. We work with the local people, photographers, and mountaineers, to obtain valuable data. Project supporters and collaborators include the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Scien
ces (CIRES), GlacierWorks, the High Mountains Adaptation Partnership (HiMAP), the Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR), the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), and University Centre in Svalbard. An excellent presentation on science communication by Dr. Jan Marco Mueller today. It's unbelievable how much rainforest we lose every few seconds, as his image shows. Analogies are important for understanding the magnitude of scientific results.
For example, in the Himalaya, using time-lapse cameras, we found that 'small' glacial lake drainages can amount to 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water, gone down the glacial system. Satellites flying overhead missed this. Scientists and citizen scientists with their boots on the ground remain so important to scientific discovery.
PoSSUM Graduates Scientist-Astronaut Class 1503
On October 13th, Project PoSSUM graduated 11 students as part of PoSSUM Scientist-Astronaut Class 1503. The PoSSUM candidates learned about upper-atmospheric and noctilucent cloud science while participating in realistic mission simulations developed in partnership with Embry-Riddle. These simulatio…
