In a world that moves at lightning speed, our 3rd graders are taking a step back to truly understand the rhythm of time. As part of their practical math curriculum, they crafted their own clocks.
But in Waldorf education, this project goes so much deeper than just counting minutes.
Around age nine, children experience a profound inner shift. They begin to see themselves as separate from the world around them, realizing that time moves forward and the world is vastly bigger than before. Bringing a physical clock to life with their own hands helps ground them during this transition. It turns an abstract, sometimes overwhelming concept into something tangible, beautiful, and structured.

Building the future by “reading” the past.
Check out this final project from Ms. Zekonis’ History Through Architecture block! This course isn’t just about looking at pretty buildings; it’s about decoding the three lenses that shape our world:
1. Culture & Religion: How beliefs turn into physical space.
2. Politics & Power: Who built it, and what does it say about authority?
3. Engineering & Math: The physics and geometry that keep it standing.
For the final week, students had to stop analyzing and start creating—designing original structures that solve structural problems while expressing a unique cultural identity.
From the Ziggurats of Ur to modern-day design, these students are learning that architecture is the ultimate evidence of the human experience.
When Coach Chris took to the German wheel, the festival hall went still, captivated by the sheer strength and grace of a routine that made the impossible look effortless.
It was a masterclass in the very movement and balance he teaches our children every day. Seeing the joy on the students’ faces as they watched their own games teacher glide and spin reminded us all that the best lessons are often caught, not taught.
The 7th-grade classroom was recently transformed into a workshop of strategy and history. As part of their New Frontier block, students turned the lessons into playable board games.
From hand-drawn maps to custom-carved game pieces, these board games represent a synthesis of historical research and creative problem-solving. Each student had to navigate the mechanics of risk and reward, much like the pioneers they’ve been studying.
It’s “head, heart, and hands” in action: deep thinking, artistic ex*****on, and the social joy of playing a game designed by a peer.

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.”
Our High School students are preparing to take us on a journey across the stars. From the quiet solitude of the Sahara to the peculiar inhabitants of faraway asteroids, our upcoming production of The Little Prince brings Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s timeless masterpiece to life.
In the Waldorf tradition, drama is far more than a performance, it is a practice in presence. By inhabiting these characters, our students develop a deep capacity for empathy and the confidence to speak their truth on stage.
Every element of this production is born from the students’ own hands. They have spent weeks in the workshop designing and building original props and set pieces, ensuring that every star and rose in the Festival Hall carries the imprint of their hard work and creativity.
Join us for an evening of wonder and reflection.

Yesterday’s May Festival was a beautiful reminder of the magic that happens when a community gathers with intention. So grateful for these moments of connection and the blooming season ahead.
Thank you to everyone who joined us today!
At Shining Mountain Waldorf School, community is at the heart of everything we do. Our annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day is a cherished tradition where we open our doors to the extended families and mentors who support our students.
This day offers our guests a firsthand look at the “Human Advantage” of a Waldorf education. From live performances in the atrium to immersive classroom visits, it’s a celebration of the wisdom, love, and light that our elders bring into the lives of our children.
It is easy to look at a circus performance as just a fun event, but in a Waldorf setting, it is so much more than a display of skills. When you watch these students balance on a unicycle, juggle, or master acrobatics, you are witnessing the culmination of weeks of grit, nervous energy, and the kind of focus that only comes when they are pushing their own physical boundaries.
We incorporate circus arts because it asks the whole child to show up. It integrates the head, heart, and hands in a way that is hard to replicate in a traditional classroom. They have to plan their movements, manage the vulnerability of performing in front of a crowd, and execute those movements with precise physical coordination. It builds a type of courage that is about more than just athletic ability; it is about learning how to keep going when you drop the ball and trusting the person next to you to catch you when you fall.
This is the heart of what we mean by human-centric education. It is not about being the best performer; it is about discovering what you are capable of when you are brave enough to try something that feels impossible at first.
Amazing job, performers!
