Welcome to the Department of Integrative Physiology where we study how the body works. Our teaching and research programs focus on the science of function in living systems with an emphasis on the role of physical activity in human health and function across the lifespan and the responses of different organisms to various forms of stress. Next up, Dr. Barbara Steward!
I am a new teaching faculty in IPHY and will be teaching nutrition courses. I am originally from the Chicago area and went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I did my Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences. I have research experience in regulation of macronutrient metabolism in rats and Chronic Kidney Disease in humans. I have been teaching Introduction to Nutrition since 2005, including at MSU Denver and with Red Rocks Community College for concurrent enrollment as a high school teacher in Jeffco, where I taught both math & science. Some of my interests include food, fitness, psychology, and dogs. I am really excited to be a part of the IPHY department and be able to share my love of nutrition with anyone who will listen 🙂

Over the next couple of weeks we will be introducing our new IPHY faculty! First up, Dr. Renske Lok. I’m an Assistant Professor and lead the cLOcK Lab. I originally trained in the Netherlands, where I completed my PhD studying light, sleep, and circadian rhythms, before moving to the U.S. for my postdoctoral training at Stanford University. I’m now excited to have landed in Boulder and to be building my own research program at CU!

My research focuses on understanding how light and circadian rhythms influence sleep, health, and well-being. I’m particularly interested in why people respond differently to light and how we can use those individual differences to develop personalized, light-based interventions that improve sleep and circadian health. Ultimately, I hope to translate what we learn in the lab into practical and scalable interventions that people can use in the real world. I’m especially excited about building the cLOcK Lab, developing new collaborations across disciplines, and working with students and trainees as the lab grows.

Outside of work, I’m also very excited about everything Colorado has to offer. I love being outdoors and exploring new places, and with my husband, young son and a wonderfully crazy Border Collie dog, life is rarely quiet. We’re looking forward to lots of hiking, camping, skiing and other outdoor adventures!

The 4th annual History of Medicine Global Seminar took 15 students to London and Edinburgh this summer for an immersive look at how medical practices have evolved across centuries. Led by Amanda Schaetzel, the group explored topics ranging from early surgical techniques and humoral theory to body snatching and the sweeping impact of diseases like plague, cholera, and malnutrition. A highlight of the Edinburgh portion included touring 17th‑century underground tenements, offering students a vivid sense of historical living conditions.
