Tessa Landon completed her Mortenson Center in Global Engineering and Resilience practicum with Virridy, tackling real-world challenges in water quality monitoring and sensor validation. We asked Tessa what skills she gained that will carry forward into her career:
Tessa said:
“I became proficient with microbiological testing; mastered data management using the mWater platform; and gained experience comparing laboratory methods, ultimately identifying fundamental inconsistencies between EPA-approved enumeration techniques such as Colilert and membrane filtration. These findings shaped my understanding of the challenges facing sensor validation and the broader water sector.
The work also required patience, humility, and persistence – whether confronting a stolen sensor, improvising new housing prototypes at a Home Depot, or troubleshooting the unexpected consequences of fluctuating creek water levels. Ultimately, the experience broadened my understanding of how technology, policy, and environmental variability intersect in real-world water quality management.”
Tessa graduated CU Boulder Engineering in December 2025, with a Master of Science in Civil Systems Engineering and a Certificate in Global Engineering. This practicum is a required, hands-on component of both Mortenson Center Professional Master’s programs and the Certificate in Global Engineering — designed to bridge technical depth with real-world impact.
