New York City delayed its school AI guidance after 6,500 public comments, while 77 AI-in-education bills move through 27 states. Buried in the retreat was the clearest standard a district could ask for: prepare students for a world where AI is present without letting it replace their thinking. That is a testable line. But a new FutureEd analysis points at the number that actually predicts learning. In one study, tutors using an AI assistant were 10 percentage points more likely to ask students to explain their own thinking. The variable was not who delivered the help or how cheap it was. The students most often left behind by classroom tech may have the most to gain from AI.
