Children at CCC participated in a hands-on corn husking activity as part of Boulder County’s Farm to ECE program. This simple experience connects children to local agriculture while supporting fine motor skills, sensory exploration, and early science learning.
Farm to ECE brings fresh, locally grown food into early childhood settings and offers meaningful ways for children to learn where their food comes from. Activities like this encourage healthy habits and real-world learning in a developmentally appropriate way. Boulder County Public Health

Summer Cool Down Activity in Pre-K
Today, our Pre-K students enjoyed a refreshing and engaging outdoor water play activity designed to help them cool down during the summer heat. Using a small wading pool filled with water and colorful plastic balls, children had the opportunity to engage in sensory exploration, social interaction, and fine motor development while staying safe and cool.
This type of sensory water play supports early childhood development by encouraging communication, cooperation, and problem-solving skills. Children took turns splashing, sorting, and observing the movement of the floating balls, all while engaging in conversations with their peers and educators.

Today’s hands-on learning experience gave our young learners a unique opportunity to explore Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM) in an exciting and meaningful way.
By interacting with real farm vehicles, such as this tractor, children began to understand the mechanics behind how tools and machines help grow and transport food. They asked questions, made observations, and engaged in critical thinking, skills that form the foundation for lifelong learning in STEM fields.
Introducing children to these real-world applications at an early age sparks curiosity, encourages problem-solving, and helps build a deeper appreciation for how things work in the world around them. Experiences like this are key to nurturing the next generation of innovators and engineers. Thank you to Lisa N Marv Nelson for sharing such a great experience with CCC!

With a little creativity, a cardboard box becomes an entire world of possibility. In this classroom, educators transformed a simple box into a custom roadway, sparking imagination and collaborative play. The children jumped right in, navigating the roads with toy vehicles, practicing turn-taking, storytelling, and problem-solving along the way. Open-ended materials like this encourage innovation and allow children to take the lead in creating their own experiences. Moments like these show that meaningful learning often comes from the simplest ideas.

The outdoors is an essential extension of the classroom. Outdoor art experiences give children the chance to explore materials in meaningful ways while engaging all of their senses. In this moment, a young artist is focused on drawing with chalk. These experiences support fine motor development, creativity, and early writing skills while strengthening each child’s connection to the natural world. Learning continues through every discovery made in our outdoor environment.

Exploring Language from the Start
In our infant classroom, even our littlest learners are discovering the joy of books. This little one is actively engaged as a teacher introduces familiar nursery rhymes, laying the foundation for early literacy, listening skills, and social connection.
Storytime is about bonding, brain development, and building a lifelong love of learning.

Building Skills One Block at a Time
Our Preschool 2 friends are hard at work exploring fine motor math manipulatives. These colorful connecting cubes aren’t just fun, they’re helping develop fine motor strength, hand-eye coordination, and early math concepts like counting, patterning, and spatial awareness.
Hands-on learning like this sets the foundation for future problem-solving and critical thinking, all while having fun.

In our Preschool 2 classroom, hands-on exploration is at the heart of learning. Today, one of our students engaged in a meaningful activity in the workbench area, using a measuring tape to explore the size and shape of a foam block. This type of play encourages early math skills, fine motor development, and critical thinking. Providing opportunities for children to use real tools helps build confidence and nurtures curiosity, laying a strong foundation for problem-solving and building practical skills.

This week in Preschool One, the children engaged in an exciting music exploration experience. As part of our ongoing inquiry into sound and rhythm, the class created their own instruments using everyday materials sparking creativity, fine motor development, and collaborative play.
We were also fortunate to welcome special guests who shared their personal instruments and musical talents. One memorable visit featured a bass guitar demonstration, allowing the children to explore strings, vibration, and sound production up close. These hands-on experiences help deepen our understanding of music while fostering curiosity, confidence, and joy in learning.

Commerce Children’s Center recently celebrated its anniversary, marking 35 years since opening in 1990. We honored the occasion with a 90s-themed birthday party that brought together families, staff, and friends of the CCC community.
Highlights included a barrel train ride for the children and a generous spread of ice cream and snacks served by parents from our board, and a 90's themed museum! It was a fun celebration that reflected the spirit and connection that has been part of CCC since the beginning.
Thank you to everyone who joined us—and to those who continue to support the work we do each day.
