In honor of World Laughing Day on Sunday (yes, that's a real thing) let's talk about what a good gut busting laugh can teach you about singing.

When you really let one go, you can't help but engage your core. That's not an accident. Those stomach muscles firing is exactly what's supposed to happen when you sing. When the abdominals engage, the diaphragm is doing its job, helping you move air with real energy behind it.

If you've been struggling to get some life and presence into your singing, try this:

- Let out a real laugh, as big and ridiculous as possible
- Notice where you feel it in your body
- Now try to bring that same physical engagement into your next phrase

That's not a trick. That's the mechanism working the way it's supposed to.
Reflexive responses like laughing, coughing, and even crying are some of the best teachers in singing because the body already knows what to do. We just have to learn to get out of the way.

This is exactly what we work on inside the Vocal Academy. Want me to teach you how to sing? Link in bio.

Let's talk about practice. Not the idea of it. The actual thing.

There are two ways singers practice:

- Repetition for its own sake, running something over and over hoping it gets better
- Intentional work, using specific exercises to address a specific problem

One moves you forward. The other just cements where you already are. If your coordination is off or your concept of the tone is unclear, repeating the same thing a hundred times doesn't fix it. It makes the wrong thing more familiar.

Real improvement comes from building new things:

- New coordination
- New awareness of what's actually happening when you sing
- New instincts that eventually just feel natural

You can't hear yourself the way someone outside of you can. That's not a weakness, it's just physics. The goal was never to practice forever. The goal is to build instincts you can trust.

That's exactly what we work on inside the Vocal Academy. Come sing with us. Link in bio or visit www.singwithjosh.com

Hello Sing with Josh Family!

I’ve always been a performer, a singer, an actor, storyteller. It’s part of the tapestry of my being.

When I get down, I turn to music - to singing.

Here’s a recording of me singing and playing piano on Hard Times Come Again No More.

Published in 1854 and written by Stephen Foster, Hard Times is a song that speaks of the grief and tragic experiences of the human condition.

It wafts in and out of my life during the hard times, and it brings me... not so much relief, but allows me to sort of sit in the hard times, to be aware of it, and to breathe through it in song.

It's one of my favorite tunes.
