A recently released CD comprising works by Emeritus Professor of Composition Luis Jorge González (1936-2016) was performed and recorded in the Imig Music Building (S102) by Professor of Piano Pedagogy Alejandro Cremaschi and Emeritus Professor of Double Bass Paul Erhard in December 2024. The CD—featuring González’s music for bass and piano, as well as piano solo—was produced by Professor of Collaborative Piano Margaret McDonald, recorded by Richard Hughes and supported in part by a Kayden Research Grant (CU Boulder).

The CD presents a panorama of González’s music from the 1950s until the early 2000s; he drew much of the inspiration from the tango genre of his native Argentina. González music and manuscripts are hosted by our American Music Research Center at the University Libraries Rare & Distinctive Collections.

An update from José Leonardo León (DMA ’18) who served as principal trombone faculty for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2026 YOLA National Festival Symphony Orchestra: Working with conductor Thomas Wilkins, León taught and mentored young musicians from across the country through rehearsals, sectionals, master classes and performances at the YOLA Center and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Now assistant professor of music at Florida Atlantic University, he leads FAU’s trombone studio, founded the Arts Performance and Entrepreneurship Initiative, and serves as principal bass trombone of Florida Grand Opera and a Bach Brass performing artist and clinician.

In an increasingly global ecosystem, internationalization of education and research is paramount. This week, our Dean John Davis traveled to Thailand to explore potential collaborations and exchanges with the College of Music, Mahidol University—one of the premier music schools in Asia, located in the suburbs of Bangkok.

Reports Dean Davis: "I've met with Dean Piyawat Louilarpprasert, Associate Dean for International Relations Joseph Bowman and Assistant Dean for Mobility and Exchange Junta Arakawa, enjoying conversations about ways we can strengthen our partnership."

Dean Davis further shared that the College of Music at Mahidol University comprises some 1,700 music majors studying performance, jazz and music of the world, technology and the arts, music industry studies, and more. "The campus is both impressive and beautiful, and the people so welcoming and interested in ways we might partner. Thank you to my wonderful new colleagues for their hospitality!"
