Some basic logic for conic sections:

A circle is all the points equidistant from a point.
A parabola is all the points equidistant from a point and a line.
An ellipse is all the points equidistant from 2 points (the sum of the distances is the same).
A hyperbola is all the points where the difference of the distances from two fixed points is a constant (the difference of the distances is the same).

Exponents ask the question "What number do I get if I multiply the same number however many times?" Logarithms ask the question "How many times must I multiply the same number to get a given number?"

The number one reason students don't succeed in math is they have unrealistic time expectations. In order to be successful at math you have to take a lot of time with it. There is no way around this. Before Covid-19, this was very difficult because our children had a million other activities they needed and wanted to do, but now things are different. If you are a parent or a home school teacher I encourage you to use this opportunity to help your kids develop some good math habits. Have them spend an hour (or two depending on their age) a day working on developing their math skills. Focus on quality, not quantity. Good math students are neat, thorough, and correct, not necessarily fast. If you need materials or ideas, hit me up!

Many people, myself included, have a long held belief that person to person interactions are just higher quality than online interactions. I can't say I am willing to give up this belief just yet, but what I have discovered over the last week is that it is a lot less important than I thought, especially when young people are involved. This generation of kids can't remember a time when Skype and Facetime weren't a regular part of their lives. Tutoring online has been much easier than expected even with my Special Ed students. I have incorporated a few basic tools that allow me to offer virtually the same service I offer in person. It is literally face to face, pencil on paper, open book, in home tutoring, with a little added technology that your kids won't even notice. I can show you how easy it is in ten minutes. What I love most about my job is I regularly get to see lives changed. I get to walk with young people as they choose to let go of self-defeating thoughts and attitudes (like making excuses or blaming others), and embrace responsibility and successful thinking. Unlike adults, whose bad habits are cemented through years of practice, young people are still growing and changing, and a choice for the better now can yield a lifetime of positive results. I am not just helping kids with math. I am helping them take a step away from a path that will lead to anxiety, depression, and failure, and toward a path that will lead to a productive, fulfilling, and joyful life.
